At the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development (DOTD), our mission is to plan, design, construct, and maintain a safe and reliable transportation system that supports economic growth and improves the quality of life for the people of Louisiana.

DOTD is seeking an Engineer Intern (EI 1 / EI 2) to support environmental investigations and engineering analyses used to prepare environmental documents and related technical studies for transportation projects across Louisiana.

This position is well-suited for candidates who enjoy problem-solving, field work, data-driven analysis, and technical writing, and who want to build experience applying environmental regulations to real infrastructure projects that impact communities statewide.

This position requires a driver’s license to participate in field investigations and public/agency involvement events.

While in official capacity, DOTD employees must comply with all applicable Louisiana and Civil Service laws, rules, and regulations, as well as DOTD policies, procedures, manuals, and directives.

Minimum Qualifications

Possession of a current Louisiana Engineer Intern Certificate.

NOTE:
Applications will be accepted from persons who possess a current Engineer Intern Certificate in states other than Louisiana. However, the applicant will be required to obtain a Louisiana Engineer Intern Certificate prior to appointment. The hiring agency will verify that all requirements are met.

NOTE:
Louisiana Engineer Intern Certificates are issued by the Louisiana Professional Engineering and Land Surveying Board. Licensing requirements may be viewed at www.lapels.com.

Job Duties and Other Information

The job duties and responsibilities may vary depending on the level at which the incumbent is hired. The job duties and responsibilities listed below are for an Engineer Intern 2 position and represent the duties and responsibilities that the incumbent will be expected to fulfill at the end of the training series.

Job Duties:

Work at this level is performed under close supervision with on-the-job training provided by more senior engineers. Duties may include:

  • Assist senior staff with environmental investigations and technical studies supporting environmental documents
  • Prepare simple technical documents, exhibits, and supporting materials; maintain organized project documentation
  • Participate in field investigations and technical meetings to learn DOTD environmental processes and project delivery
  • Support environmental modeling activities (air/noise) and assist with Phase I Environmental Site Assessments under supervision
  • Review and provide comments on technical documents prepared by consultants and other project partners
  • Learn and apply applicable laws, rules, and regulations (including NEPA and related requirements) through training and guided project work
  • Use applicable software and tools to support analysis, mapping, and documentation
  • Assist with DOTD public involvement activities (scheduling, set-up, attendance, exhibits, and documentation for meetings/hearings)
  • Perform other duties as assigned, including emergency/disaster support activities

Position-Specific Details:

Appointment Type: This position may be filled as either a probational appointment (open to all qualified applicants); a promotion (open to all statewide classified and agency-wide permanent status employees); or by detail to special duty.

Career Progression: This position may be filled as an Engineer Intern 1 or Engineer Intern 2. The level at which the vacancy is filled will be determined by the qualifications of the selected applicant.

Compensation: The actual starting salary depends on the education and experience of the selected applicant. Bi-weekly special entrance rates have been established as follows:

  • Engineer Intern 1: $2,115.20 biweekly

  • Engineer Intern 2: $2,263.20 biweekly
