The Grounds Department has a vacancy for a Mobile Equipment Operator 1.

This position operates mobile equipment to perform primary, regular, or recurring grounds work necessary for the beautification, growth, and maintenance of the properties for the university.

This position requires Drug Testing either because it involves safety and security sensitive work, operation/maintenance of public vehicles or the supervisor of employees engaged in the operation/maintenance of public vehicles and may require possessing a valid driver's license or commercial driver's license.

Job Duties and Other Information

Job Duties:

The Mobile Equipment Operator 1 will:

  • Operates the following types of equipment on a regular basis: field tractors with power rating up to and including 52 horsepower, tractors with bush hogs, blades, loaders, hoes, attachments, etc. gang mowers up to eight feet across, lawn mowers, and smaller handheld equipment such as weed eaters, edges, trimmers, chain saws, etc. to accomplish tasks.
  • May operate and drive vans, trucks, and flatbed trucks (one to four tons), dump trucks six yards or less, and forklifts (up to 10,000 lbs.) as necessary.
  • Responsible for safe use and minor maintenance of equipment, and report equipment issues and damage to supervisor.
  • Perform grounds work that is necessary for acreage facility of 180 acres to include work that involves almost constant exposure to unusual elements, such as extreme temperatures, toxic chemicals, biohazard materials, dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, and/or loud noises.
  • Extensive physical activity that requires strenuous physical work; heavy lifting, pushing, or pulling required of objects up to 50 pounds. Work environment involves some exposure to hazards or physical risks, which require following basic safety precautions.
  • Assist other grounds crew when necessary to perform other related mobile equipment duties as assigned by foreman, superintendent, or director.

  • Monday - Thursday: 6:45 AM - 4:15 PM

  • Friday: 6:45 - 10:45 AM

Appointment Type:

This vacancy is being announced as a classified position and is open to all qualified applicants and may be filled as a probationary or promotional appointment. This is a full-time, 40-hour per week position and considered non-exempt under the provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act and overtime can be mandatory. The selected candidate will be subject to a comprehensive background search to include criminal history and is subject to drug/alcohol testing at new hire and on a random basis. This position may require a clear driving record if required to drive on behalf of the University.
