Our Mission
Our mission is to ensure the physical, operational and financial integrity of the regional flood risk management system, in southeastern Louisiana as a defense against floods and storm surge from hurricanes. We accomplish this mission by working with local, regional, state and federal partners to plan, design, construct, operate and maintain projects that will reduce the probability and risk of flooding for the residents and businesses within our jurisdiction.

About this position

Responsible for operating a tractor and related equipment to cut and maintain grass along the levees and flood protection structures on the East Bank of the Mississippi River, which consists of Orleans, St. Bernard, and Jefferson Parishes. This ensures safe and effective vegetation control to support flood risk management, visibility, and accessibility of levee systems.

Job Duties and Other Information

Job Duties

  • Cutting and trimming grass within the Flood Protection Authority Right of way including, but not limited to floodwalls, poles, dead end streets and trees. The incumbent will be required to use gas/diesel powered tools and cutting equipment. The incumbent will operate one or more of the following types of equipment as a primary, regular and recurring function of the job including but not limited to weed eaters, pole saws, chainsaws, lawnmowers, edger, lopper, hand pruners and self-propelled cutting equipment.

  • Removes trash and debris from the SLFPA-E Right of Way. Operate all vehicles and equipment, required by your position, in a proper and safe manner. Secure and trailer self-propelled equipment/mowers to jobsites in a proper and safe manner

  • Performs miscellaneous labor duties such as cleaning of Maintenance yard. Washing vehicles, trimming trees, graffiti removal and sand bagging where problems develop

Appointment Type: Probational
Career Progression: This position does not participate in a Career Progression Group.
Compensation: The salary offered will be determined based on qualification and experience.

NOTE: The Southeast Louisiana Flood Protection Authority - East (SLFPA-E) is an emergency-oriented agency. Part of the SLFPA-E's mission is to protect the residents of the east-bank of Jefferson Parish, St. Bernard and the east-bank of Orleans from tidal surge, wind-driven water and river flooding. In emergencies during Mississippi River flooding and Hurricane/ Tropical storm events, the incumbent will be on call and must report for duty if so required and remain on duty in such situations until released from duty by the Appointing Authority.
