Our Mission
Our mission is to ensure the physical, operational and financial integrity of the regional flood risk management system, in southeastern Louisiana as a defense against floods and storm surge from hurricanes. We accomplish this mission by working with local, regional, state and federal partners to plan, design, construct, operate and maintain projects that will reduce the probability and risk of flooding for the residents and businesses within our jurisdiction.
About this position
The Engineering Technician 2-4 receives functional supervision from the Engineer Intern 1-2 of the Southeast Louisiana Flood Protection Authority - East (SLFPA-E) and is directly supervised by the Engineer 5. The incumbent performs inspections of the following flood protection systems: levees, floodwalls, floodgates and other related facilities required for the SLFPA-E and its jurisdictions (Orleans Levee District, Lake Borgne Basin Levee District, East Jefferson Levee District). Engineering Technician will also support the engineering permit department by checking construction sites for adherence with permit provisions.

Minimum Qualifications
- Possession of a high school diploma or GED plus one year of sub-professional engineering experience; OR
Six months of experience in sub-professional engineering, heavy mobile equipment operation, or mobile equipment maintenance plus one year of sub-professional engineering experience; OR
Six semester hours in one of the following specialized fields: architecture, cartography, construction management, construction technology, drafting, engineering, engineering graphics, engineering technology, industrial technology, landscape architecture, math, or physics. Job Specification

Job Duties and Other Information

Job Duties:
- Performs accurate and thorough inspections of the agency's various flood protection systems as well as periodic inspection site visits during construction projects
- Inspects levees, floodgates, floodwalls, and marine navigational complex structures to ensure critical infrastructure is in good working condition as needed (quarterly, semiannually) and following weather events
- Coordinates with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers under the supervision of the Engineer Intern 2 and Engineer 5 to inspect the Mississippi River floodwalls and levees during high river events
- Perform duties as assigned including flood gate closure notifications as well as checks throughout the flood protection system as assigned
- Email and communicate observations from inspections and permit sites as needed to engineers and if necessary, others outside of the SLFPA-E
- Assist with tracking inventory of known issues with the Flood Protection Authority flood defense system
- Communicates with the general public, contractors, and engineers concerning permit requirements and enforcement
Appointment Type: Probational
Career Progression: This position may be filled as an Engineering Technician 2, 3, or 4.
Work Schedule: This is a full-time position (40-hour work week); it offers a flexible work schedule.
Compensation: Full-time employees are eligible for a compressive benefits package, including participation in the state’s retirement plan, health insurance, agency-paid short-term disability coverage, paid holidays, and paid annual and sick leave.
**Note: During emergencies such as hurricanes or other severe weather conditions conducive to flooding, the incumbent is assigned to the Emergency Operations Center (EOC). Incumbent will be required to become certified as a levee inspector in the State of Louisiana (LA CPRA).**
