Job Duties and Other Information

Job Duties:
This position serves as a Marine Operator in the Dredge Department of the Port of New Orleans Maintenance Division.
This position participates in the required PORT training program and obtains additional training in order to facilitate the efficient performance duties and/or required tasks. This is a safety sensitive position that requires random drug screening throughout the year. The incumbent is required to possess and maintain a valid U.S. Coast Guard Master of Towing License, a Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC Card), and a Driver’s License, Class D and be knowledgeable and capable of the safe operation of various types of equipment required to fulfill the needs of the position and the PORT. The incumbent shall utilize a telephone, cell phone, two-way communication device, computer, and e-mail to facilitate communications if required. The incumbent must be able to perform duties many times without direct supervision and be knowledgeable enough to interpret unforeseen conditions as they may arise.
35% Operates work boats as required in support of Dredging operations. Tow barges, discharge pipeline pontoons and other floating equipment.
10% Manages and directs the daily operations of the Board's Dredge which maintains projects depts at assigned wharfs. This includes supervision of the entire dredging operation of the dredge, pipeline, which barge and work boats.
5% Direct supervision of lower-level supervisory personnel of the Dredge.
5% Conducts sounding and survey boat operations.
5% Schedules work assignments and evaluates work of vessel personnel.
5% Completes Master Log of all operations and submission of required reports.
5% Inspects equipment, machines, rigging and gear aboard vessels.
5% Tows disabled ferry vessels, barges, mooring pontoons and other floating equipment.
5% Supervises all emergency fire and collision drills.
5% Operates vessel equipment such as marine radio, radar and related safety equipment.
5% Plans and schedules operations such as moving the dredge and ancillary equipment to different locations.
5% Collects hydrographic data from the inspection department and inputs data into the dredge computer for accurate dredging operations.
5% Any additional duties as assigned.
Position-Specific Details:
Appointment Type: Probational, Promotional, or Job Appointment
Career Progression: This position may be filled as a Marine Operator 1, 2, or 3.
Work Schedule: Work hours are 7:00 AM to 8:00 PM (Monday), 7:00 AM to 8:30 PM (Tuesday & Wednesday). Overtime may be Required.
Compensation: This position is eligible for premium pay of up to $1.50 per hour for each hour actually worked.
