Job Duties and Other Information

Job Duties:

The purpose of this position is to operate a variety of heavy equipment for the purposes of road/bridge construction and maintenance. This position is located in DISTRICT 04/Gang 721 of the Department of Transportation and Development and reports directly to a Highway Foreman 2. The incumbent must be self-motivated and be able to perform duties with minimal supervision and able to interpret unforeseen conditions as they may arise. The incumbent will participate in appropriate DOTD structured training programs and attend all continuing education classes and conferences deemed necessary to facilitate the performance of required tasks.

The incumbent is required to possess the following specialized knowledge, skills, and abilities, as well as maintain the following licensing:

  • Class A CDL license is required
  • Drug test is required
  • Will need working knowledge of mobile device tablet and light computer work
  • May require work involving nighttime operations or call outs for emergencies that occur outside of normal work hours
  • Lifting: a maximum of 50 pounds will be required, due to servicing equipment, removing debris from roadway, and other routine maintenance work being performed. Manual lifting of more than 50 pounds requires assistance from others.

60%Operates Mobile Crane/Draglines (lifting capacity >40,000 lbs. but <80,000 lbs.) or the pile driver for pile driving operations.

20%Operates the following heavy equipment, as needed:

  • Asphalt Distributor (truck mounted)
  • Backhoes
  • Front end loaders
  • Bucket/ladder trucks
  • Cranes/draglines (lifting capacity >20,000 lbs but <40,000 lbs
  • Dozers (<140 HP)
  • Dump truck (tandem axle or trailer dump)
  • Gradalls
  • Hot mix pavers (<40 HP)
  • Motor Grader
  • Lowboys
  • Milling machines (<90 HP)
  • Road planer
  • Road widener (<90 HP)
  • Sewer Cleaners (truck mounted)
  • Striping machines
  • Sweepers
  • Track hoes (excavators)
  • Under bridge inspection units (trailer mounted)

15%Performs various road and bridge maintenance and general labor duties such as flagging, patching pot holes and full depth patches in bridge decks, cleaning storm drains and any other needed road and bridge construction and/or maintenance as directed by supervisor. Attends required training in accordance with the department’s structured training program. Provides guidance to and oversees work of lower level operators acts as lead worker and completes daily work reports for the crew in the absence of the foreman. Maintains a Class A CDL; reports CDL revocation to appropriate personnel in accordance with the department’s Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) Policy (PPM #25).

5%May be required to perform other duties as necessary, including, but not limited to, emergency/disaster support activities.

Class A, Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) will be required upon appointment. The starting salary for MEO-2/HEAVY will be $22.52/hourly.
