This job posting will be used to fill all vacant positions with the State Fire Marshal Deputy 1, 2, or Senior job title and may be filled anywhere in the State of Louisiana. The position could be filled as a probational appointment or job appointment. (NOTE: domicile in this case only refers to the physical location where you would report to work. It is NOT where you live). The domicile will not be known until there is a vacancy. This position will require travel within the assigned district and occasionally to areas outside of the domicile, as requested by the Administration.

Minimum Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Two years of experience in a criminal justice field, arson/criminal/fire investigations or inspections, a fire service field, building codes enforcement, a building construction field, architecture, occupational safety, or an engineering field; OR

An associate’s degree in any field plus one year of experience in a criminal justice field, arson/criminal/fire investigations or inspections, a fire service field, building codes enforcement, a building construction field, architecture, occupational safety, or an engineering field; OR

An associate’s degree in a criminal justice field, a fire science field, a construction field, architecture, or an engineering field; OR

A bachelor’s degree in any field.

NOTE:
A certification in an approved area may be substituted for the education and/or experience requirements at the time of appointment (hire) or promotion.

Job Concepts

FUNCTION OF WORK:

To learn codes, standards, laws, policies, and procedures relative to State Fire Marshal program areas and to become familiar with inspection and investigation practices.



LEVEL OF WORK:

Entry.


SUPERVISION RECEIVED:

Usually direct from a State Fire Marshal Lieutenant or State Fire Marshal Captain.


SUPERVISION EXERCISED:

None.

JOB DISTINCTIONS:

Differs from a State Fire Marshal Deputy 2 by the absence of experienced level duties.

Examples of Work

EXAMPLES BELOW ARE A BRIEF SAMPLE OF COMMON DUTIES ASSOCIATED WITH THIS JOB TITLE. NOT ALL POSSIBLE TASKS ARE INCLUDED.

Observes and practices inspection and investigation techniques under close supervision and completes basic inspection and investigation reports.

Researches codes and data files for compliance.

May read and interpret construction plans and manufacturers' specifications.

May test various fire and safety systems and conduct evacuation drills.

May discuss corrective actions required for compliance with building owners, facility administrators, contractors, manufacturers, architects, etc.

May assist in photographing sites of suspected arson, collecting and analyzing evidence, and interviewing witnesses.

Attends schools and/or training programs to develop program area expertise and investigative abilities.

Assists other law enforcement agencies in investigations and may provide testimony as necessary.

Trains and responds to man-made or natural disasters or emergencies including, but not limited to: fire, weather, search and rescue, medical, and hazardous material events.

Assists in evaluating and inspecting emergency shelters for occupancy.
