Duties Summary

The Hawaii National Guard Youth Challenge Academy (HINGYCA) is part of a nationwide strategy to help at-promise youths, ages 15 ½ -18, reclaim their lives. The Academy is a voluntary and drug-free program where military-style discipline provides a strong platform for self-control, responsibility, respect, and resourcefulness. The Academy's academic curriculum is based on the Department of Education High School Equivalency Test (HiSET), which is supplemented with comprehensive work and life­skills training.

This position serves as an administrative assistant to the division secretary and maintains and coordinates the administrative details of the Academy's internal office functions, and routine matters related to the position. The incumbent of the position is responsible for providing administrative services for the Academy and coordinating the flow of all communication in the office, to the division, to the field and general public.

A flex work schedule that includes day, evening, weekend, nights, and holiday hours may also be worked.

The Hawaii National Guard Youth CHalleNGe Academy, at any allotted time, without notice, reserves the right to adjust, modify and or make changes to the duties and responsibilities of this position to ensure Mission success.

Minimum Qualification Requirements

A. Experience safeguarding, person(s), the community and/or businesses.


B. Have worked in a team/collaborative environment.


C. Have demonstrated ability to work in a stressful environment.


D. Office practices and procedures; office management; operation of standard office machines; Department of Defense and State policies, rules, regulations, and requirements as they relate to Academy office operations; grammar, punctuation, spelling and work usage.


E. Ability to deal effectively with cadets (students), parents, staff and members of the general public; interpret and apply Academy, DOD and State rules and regulations to varying situations; type accurately from draft or corrected copy at a rate of 40 net words per minute; compose standard and special memos and correspondence; cope with intensity and scope of activities in dealing with parents, staff and cadets (student); plan, organize, supervise and coordinate a wide variety of clerical activities and services.


F. High School Equivalency Diploma.


PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

A. National Guard, Reserve and Retired Military members.


B. Experience working with at-promise youth.


C. Knowledge of the function of the YCA program and objectives; military organization, policies, procedures, and regulations.


D. Must have the ability to instruct/communicate orally to a group of people.


E. Ability to deal tactfully and effectively with others; keep records and prepare reports; communicate clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing; direct and supervise at-promise youth.


REQUIRED LICENSES, CERTIFICATES, ETC.

Possess a valid license to drive in the State of Hawaii, and an appropriate military driver’s license, if applicable.


Other Information

This position is exempt from the civil service and considered temporary in nature. Therefore, if you are appointed to the position, your employment will be considered to be "at will", which means that you may be discharged from your employment at the prerogative of your department head or designee at any time.
