INTRA-DEPARTMENTAL PROMOTIONAL OPPORTUNITY - Applicants must be permanent civil service members of the civil service of the Department of Transportation, Executive Branch, State of Hawaii. The eligible list will be used to fill future vacancies in Maui District (Lanai, Maui and Molokai), including vice/temporary vacancies, in the Department of Transportation, during the one-year life of the list.
Acceptance will be made for applicants who are currently a Airport Fire Lieutenant and have the required years of experience to meet the Minimum Qualifications of the Airport Fire Captain but who do not possess all of the Airport Fire Equipment Operator and/or Airport Firefighter/Recruit work experience.

In the absence of the Airport Fire Commander, takes overall command of the fire or emergency scene until relieved by higher authority and handles all shift personnel problems and provides counseling as required; supervises and directs an Aircraft Rescue and Fire Fighting (ARFF) crew in firefighting and rescue operations; procures ARFF equipment and supplies and assures maintenance and readiness of fire apparatus; conducts fire inspections of airport operational areas; provides technical guidance to subordinate supervisor in the conduct of training sessions; advises and assist subordinate supervisor in preparation of daily reports of activities; oversees maintenance of equipment, fire station and grounds, and status of personnel; enforces policies and procedures, recommending changes as needed; prepares reports. Performs other related duties as required.
Minimum Qualification Requirements

To qualify, you must meet all of the following requirements:
Basic Education: Graduation from high school, or equivalent. One (1) year of work experience which demonstrates that the applicant is able to read and comprehend written material, follow oral and written instructions, and prepare written material may be substituted for graduation from high school.
Firefighting Experience: Six (6) years of Airport firefighting experience as a Hawaii Department of Transportation (HDOT) airfield or airport as a member of the HDOT Aircraft Rescue and Firefighting Unit. One (1) year shall have been as a HDOT Airport Fire Lieutenant gaining the necessary supervisory experience. Two (2) years shall have been as a HDOT Airport Fire Equipment Operator. This experience must demonstrate that the applicant has knowledge of aircraft rescue firefighting (ARFFF) techniques, methods and procedures; use of tools and equipment peculiar to aircraft firefighting; fire suppressing agents; characteristics of different types of fires; fire prevention practices; emergency medical responder care; fire inspectional practices and procedures; and ability to physically perform the duties of the position; follow oral and written instructions; and establish and maintain good working relationships with others.
Supervisory Experience: One (1) year of supervisory experience gained while providing aircraft rescue/firefighting services at a HDOT airfield or airport. This experience must have involved assigning and reviewing the work of subordinates, rating their performance and directing the work of subordinates or teams on ARFF missions. This experience must demonstrate that the applicant possesses knowledge of ARFF theories and tactics and supervisory principles and practices and is able to direct ARFF suppression operations and supervise the work of others.
License/Certification Requirements. Certificates must be maintained on a current basis as applicable.- Valid license to drive in the State of Hawaii;
- Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and Automated External Defibrillator (AED);
- International Fire Service Accreditation Congress (IFSAC) or Pro Board Firefighter I Certificate;
- International Fire Service Accreditation Congress (IFSAC) or Pro Board Firefighter II Certificate;
- International Fire Service Accreditation Congress (IFSAC) or Pro Board Hazardous Materials Awareness Certificate;
- International Fire Service Accreditation Congress (IFSAC) or Pro Board Hazardous Materials Operations Certificate;
- National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT) Emergency Medical Technician Certificate, or Advanced Emergency Medical Technician Certificate (AEMT), or National Registry Paramedic Certificate or Emergency Medical Responder.
- Incident Commander 100, 200 and 300 (IFSAC or Pro Board).
- National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 1002 Driver/Operator - Pumper and Driver/Operator ARFF (IFSAC or Pro Board Certification).
- NFPA 1041 Fire Instructor I (IFSAC or Pro Board Certification).
- NFPA 1021 Fire Officer I (IFSAC or Pro Board Certification)
- NFPA 1021 Fire Officer II (IFSAC or Pro Board Certification)
