Duties Summary
Operates and maintains motorized vessels in support of scientific research and training in protected waters and up to approximately 35 miles from shore; and performs other related duties as assigned.

LEGAL AUTHORIZATION TO WORK:
The State of Hawaii Requires all persons seeking employment with the government of the State shall be citizens, nationals, or permanent resident aliens of the United States, or eligible under federal law for unrestricted employment in the United States.
Basic Education / Experience Requirements:
Applicants must have experience which demonstrates the ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing. This requirement may be met from part-time and/or unpaid work experience. This requirement may also be met by successful completion of high school courses in English.
Experience Requirements:
A. Boat Maintenance Experience: One (1) year of experience in maintaining motorboats which demonstrated knowledge of: boat and engine maintenance requirements and repair practices and techniques; use of tools commonly used in the repair and maintenance of boats; and mechanical and electromechanical devices related to boats. This experience may be met concurrently with, or separate from, the Motorboat Operation Experience.
B. Motorboat Operation Experience: Four (4) years of experience in the operation of a motorboat or vessel, of which at least one (1) year shall have been in Hawaiian waters. This experience must have demonstrated knowledge of: maritime rules of the road; navigational aids used to plot course and position of vessels; vessel safety procedures relating to personnel, equipment and operation; currents, wind, wave and hazardous conditions characteristic of boating in Hawaiian waters; and proper boat handling techniques; and ability to: plot course and position of vessel using navigational aids such as charts, sextant, radar, loran, radio directional finder, and depth recorder.
Supervisory Aptitude:
Applicants must possess supervisory aptitude. Supervisory aptitude is the demonstration of aptitude or potential for the performance of supervisory duties through successful completion of regular or special assignments which involve some supervisory responsibilities or aspects of supervision, e.g., by serving as a group or team leader; or in similar work in which opportunities for demonstrating supervisory capabilities exist; or by the completion of training courses in supervision accompanied by application of supervisory skills in work assignments; and/or by favorable appraisals by a supervisor indicating the possession of supervisory potential.
Forklift Operator Certification: You must be certified as a competent operator of a gasoline and diesel-powered forklift within six (6) months from the date of hire.
Licenses Required:- U.S. Coast Guard Master's license or higher; and
- A valid Federal Communications Commission (FCC) Restricted Radio Telephone Operator's Permit and a First Aid Certificate (including CPR) must be acquired within six (6) months from the date of hire.
