INTRA-DEPARTMENTAL PROMOTIONAL OPPORTUNITY - Applicants must be permanent civil service members of the Department of Transportation, Executive Branch, State of Hawaii. The eligible list will be used to fill current and future vacancies Statewide, including vice/temporary vacancies, in the Department of Transportation, during the one (1) year life of the list.

Acceptance will be made for applicants who are currently an Airport Fire Equipment Operator and who do not possess all the required Airport Firefighter/Recruit work experience but have the required years of experience to meet the Minimum Qualification of the Airport Fire Equipment Operator.

Shift Work: Applicants must be available to work rotating shifts, including evenings, weekends and holidays.

APPLICANTS MUST:

1. Be a Department of Transportation (DOT) employee who is a member of the State's civil service.
2. As of the last formal appraisal report, shall have demonstrated satisfactory performance in his/her position; AND
3. Meet the minimum qualification requirements of this position at the time of application.

NOTE: The starting monthly salary is at the minimum rate of pay advertised above.

Duties Summary

Operates and maintains all types of aircraft crash rescue vehicles; drives major firefighting equipment to the scene of a crash fire, or other emergency and operates foam generators, ground sweeper, and other similar equipment; participates in fire safety prevention inspections of airport facilities; and performs other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualification Requirements

To qualify, you must meet all of the following requirements:

Basic Education: Graduation from high school, or equivalent. One (1) year of work experience which demonstrates the applicant is able to read and comprehend written material, follow oral and written instructions, and prepare written material may be substituted for graduation from high school.

Firefighting Experience: Three (3) years of Airport Firefighting experience at a Hawaii Department of Transportation (HDOT) airfield or airport as a member of the HDOT Aircraft Rescue and Firefighting Unit. This experience must demonstrate that the applicant has knowledge of ARFF techniques, methods and procedures; use of tools and equipment peculiar to aircraft firefighting; fire suppressing agents; characteristics of different types of fires; fire prevention practices; first responder medical care; fire inspectional practices and procedures; and ability to physically perform the duties of the position; follow oral and written instructions; and establish and maintain good working relationships with others.

License/Certification Requirements. Certificates must be maintained on a current basis as applicable.

  1. Valid license to drive in the State of Hawaii;
  2. Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and Automated External Defibrillator (AED);
  3. International Fire Service Accreditation Congress (IFSAC) or Pro Board Firefighter I Certificate;
  4. International Fire Service Accreditation Congress (IFSAC) or Pro Board Firefighter II Certificate;
  5. International Fire Service Accreditation Congress (IFSAC) or Pro Board Hazardous Awareness Certificate;
  6. International Fire Service Accreditation Congress (IFSAC) or Pro Board Hazardous Operations Certificate;
  7. National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT) Emergency Medical Technician Certificate, or Advanced Emergency Medical Technician Certificate (AEMT), or National Registry Paramedic Certificate or Emergency Medical Responder (EMR) Certificate.
  8. National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 1002 Driver/Operator - Pumper and Driver/Operator - ARFF (IFSAC or Pro Board).
  9. Incident Commander 100 and 200.

Physical and Medical Requirements: Applicants must be physically able to perform the essential duties of the position, effectively and safely, with or without reasonable accommodation. The essential duties typically require, but are not limited to, the ability to engage in sustained physical exertion and perform arduous work under adverse conditions (e.g. lift and carry people and firefighting equipment wearing Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus [SCBA] with mask and other personal protective equipment during rescue and salvage activities); climb five flights of stairs and swim.
