Job Description and Duties
The incumbent works under the supervision of the Research Scientist Supervisor I (RSS I), Unit Supervisor of the Surveillance and Data Use Unit, Surveillance and Research Section, Chronic Disease Surveillance and Research Branch (CDSRB). The Research Scientist (RS) organizes and carries out surveillance and epidemiologic research studies of limited scientific scope and complexity and supports the implementation of the cancer surveillance plan for California’s statewide population-based surveillance systems and the evaluation of their effectiveness. The RS produces routine annual incidence and mortality reports and other special topic surveillance reports of limited scientific scope and complexity, performs linkages, assists in the coordination of statewide responses to cancer concerns, and responds to requests for data. In addition, the RS collaborates with Center for Healthy Communities (CHC) and CDPH programs on projects related to health equity framework.

Working Conditions
Telework Information
This position may be eligible for telework. The amount of telework permitted is at the discretion of the Department and is subject to change, consistent with CDPH’s Telework Program. All employees who telework are required to be California residents in accordance with Government Code 14200. Candidates who reside outside of the state of California may be interviewed; however, the selected candidate must have a primary residency in the state of California prior to appointment (and continue to maintain California residency) as a condition of employment. Failure to meet this requirement may result in the job offer being rescinded.
Travel may be required for this position. Reimbursement for travel takes into consideration an employee’s designated headquarters, as reflected in the duty statement, and is subject to regulations and bargaining unit contract provisions. All commute expenses to the designated headquarters office will be the responsibility of the selected candidate.

This position is in the Chronic Disease Surveillance and Research Branch (CDSRB) under the California Department of Public Health (CDPH). CDSRB is committed to supporting the CDPH mission and strategic plan of serving the public by collecting, managing, and sharing statewide data about chronic diseases and risk factors, conducting surveillance and research to monitor and report incidence, prevalence, disparities, and factors contributing to chronic diseases to improve the health of Californians. CDSRB coordinates these activities by directing, managing, and monitoring the state-mandated Ken Maddy California Cancer Registry (CCR), California's Comprehensive Cancer Control Program (CCCP), the Richard Paul Hemann California Parkinson's Disease Registry (CPDR), the California Neurodegenerative Disease Registry (CNDR), and the California Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (CA BRFSS) . In addition to its surveillance and research activities, CDSRB also engages in extensive public health initiatives and educational programs aimed at promoting awareness and prevention of chronic diseases. By collaborating with various partners and leveraging advanced data analytics, CDSRB strives to identify emerging health trends to provide information and guidance toward evidence-based interventions. These efforts ensure a comprehensive approach to chronic disease prevention and management across the state.
