Job Description and Duties

Under the general direction of the Supervising Transportation Engineer, the Senior Transportation Engineer serves as an Engineering Technical Lead with the High-Speed Rail Authority (Authority). The Senior Transportation Engineer is responsible for providing technical oversight for the Station and Facilities Unit to support design and construction of facilities such as train stations and maintenance facilities at the Authority, a complex railroad megaproject. The Senior Transportation Engineer ensures that all building systems and designs comply with applicable codes, standards, and State of California regulations including seismic safety, sustainability, and accessibility. Provides technical guidance and oversight throughout project design and construction phases. The Senior Transportation Engineer represents the Authority at various meetings, with contractors, consultants, and representatives from other federal, state, regional, and local agencies. The Senior Transportation Engineer prepares correspondence between contractors, consultants, and other stakeholders, regarding technical engineering issues.

Working Conditions

Part-time telework is available for this position for California residents based on the requirements of the position and may be discussed during the interview process. Hiring interviews may be available virtually, using teleconferencing or video conferencing options.

While working on-site, the incumbent works in a professional office environment, in a climate-controlled area which may fluctuate in temperature and is under artificial light. The incumbent will be required to use a computer, mouse, and keyboard, and will be required to sit for long periods of time at a computer screen.
While working at a construction site, the incumbent may be exposed to hazards such as unguarded machinery, heavy construction equipment, high-voltage electricity, and hazardous materials such as paints, solvents, silica dust, or other dangerous construction materials.

Desirable Qualifications

In addition to evaluating each candidate's relative ability, as demonstrated by quality and breadth of experience, the following factors will provide the basis for competitively evaluating each candidate:
  • Knowledge of principles and practices of architectural and engineering design, including building envelope, structural, and MEP systems.
  • Knowledge of building Information Modeling (BIM) standards, workflows, and data coordination practices.
  • Ability to understand and interpret California Building Codes, Fire/Life Safety Codes, Title 24 Energy Regulations, CALGreen, and ADA standards.
  • Knowledge of and experience in Seismic design principles and their application in structural engineering and building and facility systems.
  • Experience working on design-build and design-bid-build projects.
  • Knowledge of and ability to apply engineering judgment in areas of design and construction engineering on building and maintenance facility projects.
  • Experience with design criteria, standard specifications and or directive drawings and technical reports and correspondence.
  • Strong written, oral, and presentation skills.
  • Ability to work independently but with the judgement to know when to ask for assistance and guidance from a supervisor or colleague.
  • Experience providing technical oversight related to transportation projects.
  • Project management principles including scheduling, budgeting, and scope control.
  • Contract management and consultant coordination practices.
  • Knowledge of Safety and environmental regulations applicable to public building projects.
  • Engineering coordination experience.
  • Experience with contract management.
  • Experience managing contractors and consultants or being a team lead over a transportation project.
  • Experience building and maintaining positive working relationships with internal and external stakeholders.

Location

The High-Speed Rail Authority headquarters building is located in downtown Sacramento on the corner of 8th and L Street. We are located one block away from the 8th and Capitol light rail stop, as well as the 7th and Capitol light rail stop. The building is also within walking distance of DOCO, the California State Capitol Park, a farmer’s market during summer months, and Old Sacramento.
