Job Description and Duties
PARK AIDE (SEASONAL) (ANGEL ISLAND) – BAY AREA DISTRICT / S.F. BAY SECTOR
“Priority consideration will be given to any person receiving State public assistance under the CalWORKs program. Applicants who receive State public assistance need to identify their status as a CalWORKs recipient in the comments area on the application. Applicants must submit a verification of their CalWORKs eligibility status, which may include the most recent Notice of Action showing TANF eligibility or a copy of your last aid check stub. If verification is not submitted with the application, the application will not be processed. (Applicants may obtain verification from the CalWORKs program).”
This position works under the supervision of the State Park Peace Officer Supervisor I (Ranger or Lifeguard). The reporting location is Angel Island State Park.
Primary duties include greeting visitors on public docks, providing information and directions to visitors, assisting campers with checking into their reserved campsites, collecting fees from boaters using the day-use boat slips, cleaning and maintaining the docks, driving vehicles to transport visitors and island residents, assisting with housekeeping such as removing garbage and cleaning facilities, assisting State Park Boat Operators with vessel operations, performing interpretation, educating visitors about rules and regulations, and other duties as required.
Angel Island State Park is a fantastic place to gain valuable experience in interpretation and education, and offers opportunities to interpret areas of cultural and natural significance on the island. Limited dormitory-style housing in historic buildings is affordable, starting at $70/month. Transportation by ferry and the State Park boat at regularly scheduled times is free. Island life is tranquil, with beautiful scenery and wildlife. For employees who live on the mainland — the ferry commute is a great way to start and end the day.
This position works as a crew member on State Park vessels to assist with vessel operations. Pre-employment and random drug testing are a U.S. Coast Guard requirement. This is a uniformed position, and the employee must abide by all applicable departmental uniform and grooming standards. Hiring process requires fingerprinting, substance abuse screening and a background check. Must meet education and experience requirements. Must be willing to weekends and holidays.
This position may work up to 1500 hours within 12 consecutive months. This position is designated as not telework eligible.
The selected candidate is required to submit to a background investigation process utilizing Live Scan fingerprinting prior to appointment.
Possession of a valid driver’s license of the appropriate class and a safe driving record as documented by the Department of Motor Vehicles within 60 days prior to appointment. (A safe driving record is one free from convictions in the past two years for repeated moving violations or a single serious violation, such as drunk driving or reckless driving.)
State housing may be required. Special Requirement/Condition of Employment: Depending on the assigned location, the incumbent may be required to occupy state-owned housing to meet operational needs or may be offered state-owned housing if available. Housing assignments will be determined in accordance with Department policy, operational priorities, and applicable labor agreements. Working Conditions
Work will be performed outside in the park in all types of weather conditions. Typical work activities may involve prolonged sitting, bending, stooping and lifting. Works inside and outside in varying temperatures, may have exposure to dirt, dust, fumes, unpleasant odors and/or loud noises. May work in remote locations as well as a fast-paced environment. May require heavy physical work including lifting, pushing or pulling equipment and materials weighing up to 40 pounds.
