The Department of Fish and Wildlife's Salton Sea Management Program is seeking a motivated, positive and innovative individual to work as a Water Resource Control Engineer located at our Inland Deserts Region Field offices located in Riverside and Imperial Counties. The engineer would need to understand or be willing to learn the biology and needs of the species, working closely with a team of scientist that are restoring habitat for both species and humans.
The position would work as part of the multi-agency Salton Sea Management Program to meet the State Water Resources Control Board Order 2017-0134, which is aimed at minimizing public health and environmental concerns related to the shrinking Salton Sea. Under the general supervision of the Department's Salton Sea Program Manager, The incumbent provides engineering support performing analysis to support the implementation of the Salton Sea Management Program, including the construction and management of approximately 29,800 acres of habitat and dust suppression projects.
In order to be eligible for this position, you must either be transfer eligible or take and pass the following exam.
Class Title: Water Resource Control Engineer
This position may be eligible for a telework opportunity in accordance with departmental policies and operational needs. Beginning July 1, 2026, employees will be required to work in-person at least four (4) days per week in alignment with Executive Order N-22-25. Additional in-office days may be required based on operational needs.
Personal Leave Program: Effective July 1, 2025, state employees are subject to temporary salary reductions ranging from 2% to 4.62% in exchange for Personal Leave Program (PLP) hours. Please note that the salary ranges listed in this Job Control may not reflect these reductions associated with the 2025 Personal Leave Program.

Working Conditions
Duties consist of office activities and field work. A valid Driver’s license is required for driving State vehicles to remote areas where no public transportation is available. Field work can be in adverse weather and hiking over rough terrain with no vehicle access. Travel will be required for meetings and field work. Project site visits may require driving a 4x4 vehicle, ATV and/or OHV with travel up to three or more hours each way and sometimes including early mornings and late nights; may include operation or being a passenger on a boat or other watercraft and occasional travel to Sacramento may be required. Office is located at the Bermuda Dunes Field Office in Riverside County with the majority of work taking place at the south end of the Salton Sea in Imperial County. Work in this position is highly independent. The Position may require the incumbent to wear a uniform identifying the employee as CDFW staff. This position offers the possibility of an office-centered telework agreement based on the Department's current Telework Policy.

(1) This position requires knowledge of species and water relationships within arid desert systems. Please describe any experience with arid water systems and species associated with them.
(2) This position requires communicating and interacting with a diverse group of people including Department staff, the Salton Sea Management team, the public, various non-governmental organizations, tribes and other state and local agencies. Please describe your experience working cooperatively with diverse groups or teams.

Work cooperatively with other Department program staff, and federal, State, and nongovernmental organization partners.
Experience monitoring and control of water quality improvement projects.
Experience providing/developing guidance and giving training/presentations.
Experience with water management programs for protection of fish and wildlife resources.
Experience collaborating with internal and external stakeholders.
