Job Description and Duties

STATE PARK INTERPRETER I – NORTH COAST REDWOODS DISTRICT / INTERPRETATION AND EDUCATION / REDWOOD NATIONAL AND STATE PARK


The State Park Interpreter I reporting location is Jedediah Smith Redwoods State Park in Hiouchi, California. Under the direction of the State Park Interpreter III (District Interpretive Program Manager), supports community engagement public programming activities necessary to create high-quality and relevant visitor interpretive experiences that connect visitors and community members with our parks and resources. Assists in researching, planning, developing, presenting and supporting innovative interpretive programs within the northern portion of the Redwood Coast Sector and across Redwood National and State Parks (RNSP).
The incumbent works with both the NCRD Interpretation & Education Program Manager and National Park Service RNSP Interpretation & Education management and staff on a regular basis to support interpretive programming within the northern portion of the Redwood Coast Sector. Additionally, the incumbent supports community engagement efforts district-wide and in other nearby Redwoods Coast Sector state parks.
Engages in personal and non-personal interpretive services and supports community engagement efforts through interpretive special events, community events, conferences, career fairs, local schools, and partnerships with community groups, Tribal partners, and park partners. This position works closely with National Park Service staff, California State Parks staff, Tribal partners, cooperating associations, volunteers, seasonal interpretive staff, local schools, and community organizations. Assists in developing and delivers junior ranger programs, nature walks, campfire programs, roving interpretation, visitor center services, and interpretive programs for school groups visiting State Parks within Redwood National and State Parks (RNSP) and other parks within the North Coast Redwoods District (NCRD). Develops and delivers in-classroom programs and distance-learning programs through the Parks Online Resources for Teachers and Students (PORTS) program. Assists in the hiring, training, scheduling, and evaluation of seasonal staff, docents, and volunteers, and serves as a staff lead in support of both NCRD and RNSP Interpretation & Education leadership. Develops interpretive media including exhibits, signs, brochures, visitor guides, newsletters, web content, live-stream video, and social media content.
The incumbent will undertake special assignments as needed throughout NCRD, perform administrative tasks as necessary, and may work irregular and weekend hours.

The selected candidate is required to submit to a background investigation process utilizing Live Scan fingerprinting prior to appointment.

This position is designated as not telework eligible.

Special Requirement/Condition of Employment: Depending on the assigned location, the incumbent may be required to occupy state-owned housing to meet operational needs, or may be offered state-owned housing if available. Housing assignments will be determined in accordance with Department policy, operational priorities, and applicable labor agreements.
