Job Description and Duties
The Environmental Chemistry Laboratory (ECL), Berkeley provides the Department of Toxic Substances Control (DTSC) with expertise in method development, quality assurance, data evaluation and analysis of environmental samples. ECL also studies new chemicals of concern and provides DTSC management with analytical information for decision making. Join us today!
As a Research Scientist Staff you will have the opportunity to:
- Serve as scientific advisor to other lower-level scientists conducting studies in their specific scientific field of expertise
- Monitor the progress of small-scale projects performed by lower-level staff (Research Scientists I, II, Environmental Scientists, fellows, and interns) to meet the performance objectives of the project
- Work independently or as the lead in a group to develop and verify standard methods and/or validate in-house analytical methods for DTSC complex, priority projects using sophisticated computer interfaced equipment and Gas Chromatography (GC), High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC), Inductively Coupled Plasma (ICP) and Mass Spectrometer (MS) hyphenated instruments and microscopy techniques
- Use standard and in-house developed methods to analyze environmental samples, consumer products, biological samples and other types of media or materials submitted by DTSC programs and external partners
- Manage and participate in ISO/IEC 17025 Quality Management System activities such as Proficiency Testing (PT), verification and validation of analytical methods, External Assessment, Internal Audits, and Management Review
- Initiate and oversee Corrective Action Records (CARs) for deficiencies and Continual Improvement Processes (CIPs)
Desirable Qualifications We Look For:
- Experience with standard analytical testing methods, such as EPA and ASTM methods
- Experience with mass spectrometry and/or other analytical chemistry techniques and instrumentation
- Research experience working independently on projects
- Experience developing analytical methods
- Experience leading projects under quality management system

Working Conditions
Effective July 1, 2025, specific Bargaining Units and associated Excluded State employees are subject to a salary reduction between 2% - 4.62% in exchange for hours in the Personal Leave Program 2025 (PLP 2025) per month.
