Job Description and Duties

STATE PARK INTERPRETER I – NORTH COAST REDWOODS DISTRICT / INTERPRETATION AND EDUCATION / TOLOWA DUNES STATE PARK


The State Park Interpreter I reporting location is at 1111 2nd St. Crescent city CA 95531, Tolowa Dunes State Park. Under the direction of the State Park Interpreter Ill (District Interpretive Program Manager) is responsible for building and sustaining park partnerships and community engagement public programming activities necessary to create high-quality and relevant visitor interpretive experiences to connect visitors and community members with our parks and resources. Assists in researching, planning, developing, presenting and supporting innovative interpretive programs within the northern portion of the Redwood Coast Sector and across Redwood National and State Parks (RNSP). Engages in personal and non-personal interpretive services and community outreach events with a focus on community building, engagement, and recruitment. This position works closely with National Park Service staff, California State Parks staff, Tribal partners, cooperating associations, volunteers, seasonal interpretive staff, local schools, and community organizations. Develops the less difficult material and present junior ranger programs, nature walks, campfire programs, roving interpretation, visitor center services, and interpretive programs for school groups including programming associated with the Howland Hill Outdoor School within RNSP. Assists with developing and delivers in-classroom programs and distance-learning programs through the Parks Online Resources for Teachers and Students (PORTS) program. Assists in the hiring, training, scheduling, and evaluation of seasonal staff, docents, and volunteers, and serves as a staff lead in support of both NCRD and RNSP Interpretation & Education leadership.

The selected candidate is required to submit to a background investigation process utilizing Live Scan fingerprinting prior to appointment.

This position is designated as not telework eligible.

Special Requirement/Condition of Employment: Depending on the assigned location, the incumbent may be required to occupy state-owned housing to meet operational needs, or may be offered state-owned housing if available. Housing assignments will be determined in accordance with Department policy, operational priorities, and applicable labor agreements.
