Job Description and Duties

FORESTRY ASSISTANT II (PERMANENT/INTERMITTENT) – NORTH COAST REDWOODS DISTRICT / NATURAL RESOURCES / FORT HUMBOLDT STATE HISTORIC PARK

The reporting location for this position is Fort Humboldt State Historic Park located in Eureka, CA, though duties will necessitate travel throughout the District.
Under the general supervision of the Forester II (Supervisory) incumbents will perform, forest restoration, prescribed fire and occasional fire suppression assignments as well as overseeing crews and contractors implementing similar work. Work may also involve botanical surveys, exotic plant control, habitat restoration and vegetation inventory/monitoring/mapping. Responsibilities will also involve assisting with analyzing/summarizing data and GIS field mapping and desktop GIS analysis.

Incumbents entering State service at this level will, as necessary, receive in a timely manner and prior to working in emergency assignments, all training specific to the Forestry Technician (California Department of Forestry "Basic Fire Fighter" training as is required for Fire Fighter II) and Forestry Assistant I (California Department of Forestry "Basic Fire Control") unless proof of completion is shown. One of the requirements for permanent status in this class is successful completion of the training course, but prior certification and wildland fire experience is preferred. Incumbents may receive additional training, as required, to perform their assigned functions, in such areas as forest surveying, map reading, cruising, dendrology, advanced firefighting and GIS. Tasks will further Natural Resources Division projects and programs as identified by the Forester II.

This position may work up to 1500 hours in any calendar year. Extensions may be granted for an additional 540 hours per year.

This position is designated as not telework eligible.

The selected candidate is required to submit to a background investigation process utilizing Live Scan fingerprinting prior to appointment.

Training and Development Assignments may be considered.
