The Job

The San Bernardino County Fire Protection District is currently recruiting for Assistant Fire Marshal - Community Safety who will coordinate and supervise fire prevention personnel in performing specialized activities and programs pertaining to plan check, inspection, investigation, special events, and public education. The OFM accomplishes the vital purpose of preventing emergencies through the education, engineering, and enforcement of health and safety laws and regulations, and is actively involved in emergency preparedness and response to fires and hazardous materials incidents. Responsibilities of Assistant Fire Marshal includes, knowledge of various codes and ordinances; determining fire protection requirements for new development and construction projects; reviewing and interpreting plans; managing a wide variety of community risk reduction and safety programs; and representing the department at meetings with business professionals and city and county officials.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

Background: A successful background check is required prior to assignment.
Work Hours: May occasionally require working overtime, weekends, and/or holidays for special assignments; positions are eligible for return to work and overtime compensation.
Travel: Travel within and outside the County may be required. A valid California Class C Driver License is required to carry out the essential job-related functions of this position. Proof of automobile liability insurance must be maintained.
Certifications: Must obtain California State Fire Marshal (CSFM) Fire Inspector I Certification within 12 months of hire or may be demoted/terminated. Incumbents may be expected to obtain additional related and more advanced certifications.

Minimum Requirements

Must possess CSFM Certifications, Education, and Experience as follows:
CSFM CERTIFICATIONS: Must possess California State Fire Marshal (CSFM) Fire Inspector I Certification (or CSFM Fire Inspector 1A, 1B, 1C, 1D course certificates).

Equivalent Certificates:
CSFM
  • Fire Prevention Officer (or Fire Prevention Officer 1A, 1B & 1C course certificates)
CSFM, Pro Board, NFPA, DOD, or ICC
  • Fire Inspector I


Copies of qualifying Certifications MUST be attached.
--AND--
EDUCATION: Thirty (30) semester (45 quarter) units in Fire Science, Fire Safety, or closely related field.
--AND--
EXPERIENCE: Three (3) years of paid work experience with the primary responsibility of performing a variety of fire prevention work through field inspections, code enforcement, special events, public education, and other community safety functions; experience must include working with plans related to fire and building code requirements; one (1) year of experience should include lead worker experience.

Substitution: Possession of an Associate's degree or above in Fire Science or closely related field may substitute for up to one (1) year of the required experience.
-OR-
An additional year of qualifying experience may substitute for the required education.

An equivalent combination of the above may be considered.


NOTE: Ensure your work history clearly details qualifying experience in fire protection plan review, fire prevention-related inspections, public education activities, and experience with inspections or standby at special events as a fire life safety officer.

Desired Qualifications

The ideal candidate will possess CSFM Fire Inspector I, II, and Plans Examiner Certifications, along with a related college degree, and possess extensive experience in Fire Codes and Ordinances. In addition, this ideal candidate will have excellent customer service, problem analysis, and conflict resolution skills, as demonstrated in performing highly complex tasks while working in a team environment.
