The Job

San Bernardino County Land Use Services is seeking a motivated and detail-oriented individual to serve as a Land Use Technician. Land Use Technicians play a key role in processing various planning, building, and development-related applications to ensure compliance with county regulations.

Key responsibilities may include:

  • Process Special Use permit and license applications.
  • Provide accurate and timely information to the public regarding land use ordinances, enforcement procedures, case or permit information, and appeal processes.
  • Conduct field investigations to verify compliance with County codes.
  • Prepare notices, correspondence, hearing documents, discovery packets, and internal reports.
  • Assist staff with administrative tasks including citation entry, statistical reports, case file preparation, and case management system updates.
  • Conduct detailed phone investigations for nuisance complaints.
  • Review evidence and recommend enforcement action for short-term rental complaints.
  • Prepare for and conduct appeal hearings.
  • Confirm and document progress for issued building permits on open cases.
  • Create and process abatement invoices.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

Pre-Employment Process: Prior to appointment, applicants must undergo a background check, which includes fingerprinting and a medical exam.

Work Schedule: Candidates must be available to work weekends and holidays, as required.

Travel: Travel throughout the County may be required and employees will be required to make provisions for such transportation. Employees must be able to work in varied terrains throughout the County, including mountain and desert regions.

Sponsorship: San Bernardino County is unable to consider candidates who require Visa Sponsorship at this time or in the future. Candidates must be able to present their legal right to work in the United States.


Minimum Requirements

Candidates must meet ONE of the Experience Options below to qualify.

EXPERIENCE OPTION 1: One (1) year of full-time equivalent experience processing permit applications for, or enforcing, code compliance related to land use, building, construction, fire, environmental, or other code regulations, which includes explaining related regulations and requirements to the public.
EXPERIENCE OPTION 2: Two (2) years of full-time equivalent experience providing public information and/or performing investigations, inspections, or fieldwork related to planning, land use, code enforcement, or a closely related field.

Desired Qualifications

Ideal candidates will possess strong customer service and organizational skills, attention to detail, and the ability to multitask effectively. Candidates must also be available to work weekends and holidays, as required, and be able to work in varied terrains throughout the County, including mountain and desert regions.

Examination Procedure:
There will be a competitive evaluation of qualifications based on the information provided in the Application and the Supplemental Questionnaire.
