THIS IS A FIRE DISTRICT POSITION ONLY


The San Bernardino County Fire Protection District is recruiting for Fire Fleet Technicians for the Vehicle Services Division. Fleet Technicians perform minor repairs and perform preventive maintenance on automotive and other types of fire apparatus equipment. They also assist with major repairs to light and medium duty vehicles such as Fire staff vehicles, Ambulances, Squads, Brush Patrols, and Utility Vehicles.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

Pre-Employment Process: Incumbents must successfully complete a background check prior to appointment.

Tool Allowance: Must possess own hand tools (annual tool allowance of up to $700).

Physical Requirements: Incumbents must be physically able to lift fifty (50) pounds, stand, bend, squat, kneel, twist, turn, and stoop. Employees work outside continuously and are exposed to electricity, chemicals, heat, oil, odors, dust, gas, and noise.

Pay Differential: Emergency Vehicle Technician certification (previously known as California Fire Mechanics certification) differential ($1.75 - $2.05/hour) with proof of current certification; up to $0.60/hour for incumbents who obtain ASE certifications (per MOU (Download PDF reader)).

Licenses:

  • A valid California Class C Driver License is required to carry out the essential job-related functions of this position. Proof of automobile liability insurance must be maintained.
  • Must obtain and maintain an Air Conditioning certificate within six (6) months of hire or be terminated.
  • Annual stipend of $500 for incumbents who maintain a California Class A commercial driver license.

Minimum Requirements

Candidates must meet ONE (1) of the required options.


OPTION 1: Experience: Two (2) years of hands-on experience under a journey-level automotive and/or diesel technician, repairing and maintaining automobiles and trucks.
--OR--
OPTION 2: Experience: One (1) year of hands-on experience performing journey-level automotive and/or diesel technician, repairing and maintain automobiles and trucks.
-AND-
Certificate: Possession of Apprenticeship Completion certificate or an Automotive Technology Certificate. A legible copy of certification MUST be submitted with the Application.
--OR--
OPTION 3:
Experience: One (1) year of hands-on experience performing journey-level automotive and/or diesel technician, repairing and maintaining ambulances, light-medium duty Fire vehicles, and Fire support vehicles.

Desired Qualifications

The ideal candidate will have experience in general maintenance, servicing, and repair of emergency vehicles including ambulances, squads, brush patrols, and utility vehicles. Possession of Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certifications are highly desired. Experience working in a fire department fleet maintenance or emergency services vehicle repair environment is highly desirable.
