Purpose

The Reliability Engineer will be responsible for identifying and recommending maintenance and reliability practices in a Forestry/Wood Industry manufacturing operation. The goal is to enhance key performance indicators, standardize reporting processes, and improve asset reliability through data-driven insights and innovative technologies.

Key Responsibilities

  • Identify and recommend maintenance & reliability best practices and procedures to ensure equipment assets & processes operate at optimal levels; this includes:
    • In coordination with the Maintenance Manager, conduct Reliability & Maintenance assessments on their sites current position in the progression to Strategic Asset Management
    • Participate in creating a clear reliability improvement action plans that balance short term, midterm (1-year), and strategic long term (5-year) needs
    • Work with Operations & Maintenance Team to create and execute action plans using the DMAIC process improvement methodology
  • Drive results in OEE & other key performance indicators in accordance with maintenance & reliability best practices
  • Utilize company standard reporting tools (Roseburg Data Management System and/or Oper8) to ensure standardization of downtime coding, and reporting
  • Analyze downtime, decline in production rates, and/or abnormally high maintenance costs to recommend solutions for performance improvement
  • Manage the sites Root Cause Analysis program to investigate events that adversely affect plant uptime, efficiency, quality or regulatory compliance issues using data analysis techniques that can include: Statistical Process Control, Reliability modeling and prediction, Six Sigma (6s) / Lean Methodology, and/or Root-cause Analysis (5 Why’s, Fault Tree/Cause Mapping Analysis, Fish Bone, Pareto Analysis, FMEA etc.)
  • Drive and collaborate with the Maintenance Manager on asset reliability across the operation by professionally and systematically defining, designing, developing, monitoring and optimizing an Asset Maintenance Plan that includes:
    • Value-added preventive maintenance tasks
    • Effective utilization of predictive and other non-destructive testing methodologies designed to identify and isolate inherent reliability problems before catastrophic equipment failure or downtime occurs
    • Calibration and testing activities of safety protection devices and other process instrumentation
    • Manage the plant lubrication program including the creation of job specific instructions
  • Setup and oversee plant predictive/conditioned based maintenance program
    • Champion the online IoT/AI vibration monitoring program, implemented for the most important machine assets
    • Develop & monitor execution of vibration routes using handheld data logger, and interpret results to ensure corrective actions are taken before functional failure occurs
    • Develop, monitor execution & interpret results of the oil sampling & analysis, Infrared, and Ultrasonic Monitoring Programs at the site
  • Implement standard computerized maintenance management system at the site
  • Identify key asset reliability skills required throughout the organization to obtain training in these areas (example – planning, MRO procedures, precision maintenance etc.)
  • Identify and work with local team members to implement Maintenance Skills and Apprenticeship programs that add long term value to our organization
  • Works with Engineering to ensure reliability & maintainability of new or modified installations, and provides input to the plants 5-year capital plan
  • Provides technical support to production, maintenance management and technical personnel
  • Perform all duties in accordance with safety rules and regulations
  • Perform other duties as needed

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelors degree in Engineering, Business, Manufacturing, OR an equivalent amount of experience in an industrial craft (Millwright, Electrician, or Automation) accepted in lieu of a degree
  • Two (2) or more years of experience in maintenance, reliability, or a related field; or any equivalent combination of experience and training that demonstrates the ability to perform the key responsibilities of this position
  • Understanding of effective and efficient production and manufacturing methods
  • Knowledge of mill processes and equipment
  • Working knowledge of industry technological developments and best practices
  • Working level knowledge in Preventative & Predictive Maintenance techniques
  • Proficient knowledge of CMMS & other computer software
  • Strong interpersonal skills

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelors’ degree in a classical engineering discipline (Mechanical, Electrical, Mechatronics, Reliability, Industrial or Manufacturing)
