Key Responsibilities

  • Manage a team of GIS Analysts and GIS Technicians.
  • Increase GIS team bench strength through targeted training and project management.
  • Develop a thorough understanding of Resources’ user groups and Resource Technical Services (RTS) shop processes.
  • Manage the software, data flow, and analysis for all Resources GIS, managing daily workflow requirements as well as special non-recurring and periodic projects
  • Develop and maintain all short-term and long-term System deployment, training, and continuous improvement plans.

System Integration

  • Work with Resources staff to understand existing group and department workflows.
  • Develop plans for enhancing existing GIS, paper/analog, and spreadsheet tracking processes through migration to the Enterprise GIS.
  • Identify opportunities for workflow efficiency gains through modifications to existing data management structures and increased utilization of the System.

System Design

  • Oversees the definition of all system data schemas, ensuring they effectively support resource management requirements.
  • Create and enforce protocols for reviewing schema changes, ensuring that the impact on workflows and automated scripts is controlled and manageable
  • Define custom user interface and user tool requirements and develop and or oversee the development of user interfaces and tools.
  • Define requirements of recurring GIS products such as contract maps and bank reporting requests.
  • Ensure standardization of recurring product appearance and data storage protocols.
  • Stay current on commercial GIS software developments.
  • Recommend and implement software enhancements and platform changes.

Data Integrity

  • Ensure maintenance of GIS system schema definition.
  • Ensure maintenance of GIS meta-data documentation.
  • Develop data quality standards, and screening tools to eliminate the introduction of poor-quality data to core datasets.
  • Develop and ensure use of data quality auditing tools.
  • Ensure data complies with defined topological relationships.

Data Analysis

  • Manage GIS analytical support for various business ventures.
  • Develop tools for automating and expanding the use of GIS analysis within Resources Teams

Staff Training

  • Work with Resources staff to design appropriate training paths and schedules.
  • Develop topic specific system training materials.
  • Conduct both 1 on 1 and larger group training sessions.

Staff Management

  • Implement effective safety protocols.
  • Assign projects to GIS team members including performance standards and completion dates.
  • Recruit, hire and train GIS team members.
  • Define GIS team member objectives and provide semi - annual performance evaluations.
  • Foster a positive teamwork environment that encourages active collaboration and retention.
  • Ensure team member activities are cost effective and consistent with needs and objectives.

Administration

  • Prepare annual budget including training, software and product costs by month
  • Develop system deployment and project status reports to enhance customer visibility

Required Qualifications

  • BS in Forest Engineering or Forest Management with 5+ years of GIS management experience
  • or BS in GIS with 5+ years of managing GIS data for a forest resources business or an equivalent amount of training, education, and experience
  • Supervisory experience
  • Experience and proficiency with Microsoft Office.
  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • Excellent listening, written, and verbal communication skills
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving ability

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working with GIS data for a forest resource business
  • Experienced python programmer
  • Experienced using ESRI Portal to develop web maps
  • Familiar with ESRI ArcSDE, replication, and version management
  • Familiar with VertiGIS web and mobile development tools
  • Familiar with database management.
