This is an Internal Employment Opportunity.

This recruitment will be used to fill one part-time (approximately 16 hours per week) Laboratory Technician 1 position for the College of Earth, Ocean, and Atmospheric Sciences, at Oregon State University (OSU).

This is a limited duration appointment expected to last approximately 3 months from the appointment begin date.

The W. M. Keck Collaboratory for Plasma Spectrometry located in the College of Earth, Ocean, and Atmospheric Sciences (CEOAS) at Oregon State University (OSU) is used by a diverse, large community of people across OSU, the Pacific Northwest, and beyond.

This position will provide the lab with the required expertise to support projects in trace metal chemistry, assisting in sample preparation and analysis and the upkeep of the trace metal laboratory.

Key Responsibilities
60% – Sample Preparation:
  • Handle and prepare samples for analysis. Perform acid digestion of samples. Isolate elements from digests using ion-exchange chromatography.

10% – Record Keeping:
  • Label and keep records of samples processed.

10% – Acid-Cleaning of Plastics:
  • Perform a sequential cleaning of plastics in preparation for use in the clean lab.

10% – Mass Spectrometry Analyses:
  • Measure the concentration or isotopic composition of samples on the Inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) or Multicollector-Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometer (MC-ICPMS). Perform data reduction of analyzed samples.

10% – Miscellaneous:
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the PI.
  • All work should be completed collaboratively with co-workers and students to ensure a laboratory environment that is safe, respectful and inclusive.
What We Require

One year of experience in a laboratory setting and high school courses in chemistry, biology, mathematics, or any course which included laboratory work; OR An equivalent combination of training and experience. NOTE: An Associate’s degree in Laboratory Science may substitute for the required experience.

What You Will Need
  • Demonstrated effective oral and written communication skills, and ability to engage respectfully with individuals from a variety of backgrounds and experiences
What We Would Like You to Have
  • College-level courses in chemistry and mathematics and a basic knowledge of environmental geochemistry.
  • Experience working in a clean lab and with acid-cleaning of plastics.
  • Experience with mass spectrometry, especially ICP-MS and MC-ICP-MS.
  • Experience handling and acid digesting organic samples (e.g., plant material).
Working Conditions / Work Schedule
  • Work hours are part time and will vary from week to week. Work requires the handling of non-restricted chemicals.
