Position Summary
This recruitment will be used to fill one (1) part-time (a maximum of 24 hours per week) Media and Communication Technician: Social Media Specialist for the Marine and Coastal Opportunities (MACO) office at Oregon State University (OSU).

The Marine and Coastal Opportunities (MACO) office is seeking a Media and Communication Technician: Social Media Specialist student employee to support MACO’s social media and outreach coordination.
This position supports MACO staff with creating and editing social media content, short video reels, fliers, and digital media. This individual will also support MACO in public outreach and recruitment events and provide occasional website development assistance. This opportunity reports directly to the MACO Communications and Outreach Coordinator and gives students a chance to gain the experience, knowledge, and skills to develop and produce specific media and communication products for marine programs in higher education.

Position Duties
70% – Content Creation
  • Develop content for social media (Instagram, Facebook, X, LinkedIn), such as graphics and short video reels.
  • Engage with collaborators and the public across social media platforms to grow MACO’s following and impact.
  • Stay up to date on social media trends to keep MACO’s social media presence professional yet relevant.
  • Lead and implement the “MACO Connection Series” on social media with OSU partner units.
  • Adhere to OSU branding guidelines and digital accessibility regulations.
  • Create print and digital communications materials as requested, including but not limited to flyers, stickers, webpages, event forms, listserv announcements, bulletin board postings, etc.
  • Organize MACO’s digital media resources
  • Coordinate and consult closely with MACO staff and affiliated units.
25% – Outreach & Engagement
  • Interact with the public at events to represent MACO’s programs and offerings in a professional and informative manner.
  • Advise undergraduate peers through MACO’s Peer Advising Program on coastal courses, the Hatfield student experience, marine internships, clubs, etc.
  • Equitably engage and include people from different cultures and backgrounds.
5% – Office Support and Professional Development
  • Provide general office support such as organizing files, receiving packages, restock inventory, and supporting day-to-day office operations to help keep the program running smoothly.
  • Develop professional and leadership skills through MACO’s student employee program, such as networking strategies and presentation skills.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Must be academically enrolled in a high school, community college, or university and pursuing a program or course of study
  • Must meet Academic Standing Requirements; students on academic suspension are not eligible for employment
  • Must meet the applicable minimal enrollment standard
    • High School student: Regularly enrolled in a high school or participating in a home-schooling program
    • Undergraduate and post-baccalaureate student: 6 credit hours per term
    • Undergraduate international student: 12 credit hours per term*
    • Graduate student officially admitted to Graduate School: 5 credit hours per term
    • Graduate international student officially admitted to Graduate School: 9 credit hours per term*

*International students may be allowed to carry fewer hours than specified above and still be considered “full-time” by the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). A reduced course load is approved by the Office of International Services (OIS), and must be provided to the Student Employment Center.
Additional Required Qualifications
  • A demonstrated interest in any marine or coastal studies, marine biology, ocean conservation, aquatic biology or ecology, environmental sciences, or a related field.
  • Must be a current undergraduate student at Oregon State University at the time of hire and through duration of position.
  • Proficiency in Canva, Meta Business Suite, Instagram, Facebook, X, LinkedIn, Microsoft Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook, or other similar programs and a willingness to learn new software as needed.
  • Experience in graphic design, such as creating fliers, stickers, social media posts, etc.
  • Experience editing images and videos, including short reel creation.
  • Strong interpersonal skills: ability to work as a team member and effectively interact with co-workers using a collaborative style.
  • Ability to work independently, prioritize projects and pro-actively seek guidance from supervisors as needed.
  • Must possess an exceptional eye for detail and excellent organizational skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Valid Driver’s License and ability to drive 12-passenger vans (or willingness to learn)
Preferred (Special) Qualifications
  • Knowledge of MACO’s mission and familiar with MACO’s social media and web presence.
  • Experience with Adobe Creative Suite, Drupal web software, or other relevant software products essential for digital media creation.
  • Experience in website development and design.
  • Experience working in a professional office environment
  • Familiarity with OSU branding and digital accessibility best practices.
  • Demonstrated experience in University extracurricular outreach activities
  • Experience working in a professional office environment.
  • Preference will be given to students in an undergraduate academic program at OSU who have a year or more remaining in their degree pathway.
Working Conditions / Work Schedule
Working Conditions/Work Schedule:
  • 20 hours per week during the academic school year with the opportunity to increase hours up to 24 hours per week depending on the number of needed projects.
  • 15-20 hours per week during Summer term (June through September) to help with outreach events. May increase hours up to 24 hours per week depending on the number of needed projects.
  • In-person work on Corvallis campus. Occasional remote work is possible as approved by supervisor and per OSU guidance and policies guiding remote work for students.
  • Typical hours are Monday through Friday. Work schedule is flexible to accommodate class schedules.
  • Periodic evening and weekend availability may be required.
  • This position has no set end date. The end date depends on the chosen candidate’s eligibility and preference to remain in the job.
  • Starting hourly rate of $15.05
  • Periodic travel to Hatfield Marine Science Center may be required. Travel assistance may be provided if needed.
  • Typical office environment. Part-Time Non-Benefits Eligible.
  • May be required to maneuver up to 25 pounds of weight including boxes of paper, files and/or packages for delivery.
