| Job Summary | This recruitment will be used to fill five full-time, seasonal (March to July) Biological Sciences Research Technician 1 positions for the Department of Fisheries and Wildlife at Oregon State University (OSU). This position will be located in Medford, Oregon. College of Agricultural Sciences faculty are committed to enhancing student success by engaging students in quality academic, research, internships, global studies, and other experiential learning opportunities. Positions with primary responsibility for Extension and outreach are likewise committed to learner success through programming appropriate for diverse audience. FWCS is an academic unit that reports to the College of Agricultural Sciences. The Department is composed of approximately 300 staff, including academic faculty, research assistants, classified staff, graduate students, and temporary staff. Over $8 million of externally funded grants and contracts are received each year in support of science focused on basic ecological research, conservation, and sustainable use of fish and wildlife and their habitats. The Department is the largest in the College of Agricultural Sciences, with over 1000 students in 8 degree and certificate programs, including one Bachelor of Science degree, five graduate degrees, and two graduate certificates. We are a vibrant department that promotes a supportive “family” atmosphere for all students and employees. Biological Science Research Technicians are required to conduct surveys for northern spotted owls to obtain occupancy and reproductive data as part of a short-term monitoring program. Additional work past the primary sampling period (March-mid July) may include post-field season data management (September 1-October 31, to be determined). |

| Working Conditions / Work Schedule | This job requires driving state-owned rental vehicles on primitive forest roads and navigating difficult terrain on foot to access survey sites and locate owls during both daytime and nighttime surveys. Employees must have good night and color vision and average or above hearing. The employee works independently and must be able to follow an established protocol in the field. The employee also must frequently work alone in remote forest areas and navigate over mountainous terrain. Orienteering skills, including the use of maps, compass, handheld GPS units and tablets/smart phones are essential to the collection of data in the field. The work is physically strenuous and involves working and hiking in rain, snow, heat, and on steep, brushy slopes while carrying a backpack with supplies weighing up to 25lbs. The employee should be comfortable performing these duties at night, well after dark, as required. This is a full-time position, schedules vary with changing workloads and priorities, employees will follow an approved safety plan where team members are required to work the same four, 10-hour days, Monday-Thursday totaling 40 hours each week. All the above duties must be performed with a high degree of quality, uniformity, and timeliness. The employee must work as a team member and may be required to live and work in close quarters and in isolated settings for extended periods of time. |
