Position Summary
This recruitment will be used to fill two (2) part-time (a maximum of 24 hours per week) Forest Management Student Assistant for the College of Forestry at Oregon State University (OSU).

OSU Research Forests, managed by the College of Forestry, are comprised of ten research, teaching, and demonstration forests located throughout Oregon. The 11,500-acre McDonald and Dunn Forests, located immediately to the north and west of Corvallis, are the largest of these forest properties. These forests host more than 200,000 public recreation visits per year (many from repeat visitors who live nearby) and contain 110 miles of roads and 30 miles of multi-use trails. This position assists the Associate Director of Operations with all aspects of forest management on these ten forests.

Position Duties
Position Description:
  • Harvest Unit Design utilizing lidar, canopy height models, stream classifications, visual aesthetics, etc.
  • Harvest Unit layout utilizing the tools and skills learned in the classroom
  • Contract Administration on Cut-to-Length Thinning, Variable Retention Harvests, Regeneration Harvests, Restoration Harvests, Pre-commercial Thinning, Planting, Herbicide Applications, Cultural Resources
  • Log Sale analysis to identify best value of products with best return to OSU
Minimum Qualifications
  • Must be academically enrolled in a high school, community college, or university and pursuing a program or course of study
  • Must meet Academic Standing Requirements; students on academic suspension are not eligible for employment
  • Must meet the applicable minimal enrollment standard
    • High School student: Regularly enrolled in a high school or participating in a home-schooling program
    • Undergraduate and post-baccalaureate student: 6 credit hours per term
    • Undergraduate international student: 12 credit hours per term*
    • Graduate student officially admitted to Graduate School: 5 credit hours per term
    • Graduate international student officially admitted to Graduate School: 9 credit hours per term*

*International students may be allowed to carry fewer hours than specified above and still be considered “full-time” by the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). A reduced course load is approved by the Office of International Services (OIS), and must be provided to the Student Employment Center.
Additional Required Qualifications
  • Physical and mental capacities for working safely on rugged terrain and in adverse weather conditions. Ability to communicate effectively with other staff and contractors. Vehicle transportation to and from Peavy Arboretum (office).
  • A valid drivers license with the ability to operate an OSU owned vehicle.
