Job Summary | This is an Internal Employment Opportunity. This recruitment will fill one Biological Science Research Technician (BRST) position for the Human and Ecosystem Resilience and Sustainability Lab (HERS) Oregon State University -Cascades. This position is located in Bend, Oregon. The BSRT will support wildlife connectivity research by collecting and processing camera trap images from wildlife crossing structures in central Oregon. The technician will implement a camera trapping study design and follow pre-established decision-making protocols. Responsibilities include coordinating fieldwork and volunteer schedules and managing a camera trap image database. The position will be supervised by the project PI and a Research Analyst 3, who will provide guidance on project goals and objectives. The technician will make decisions in accordance with the Oregon Wildlife Crossing Structure Camera Trap Monitoring Protocol and relevant agency protocols for environmental and safety standards. Duties include handling state agency-owned camera traps and images, uploading large image and tabular datasets to internal and shared databases, reviewing and tagging wildlife images, and converting images into tabular formats for analysis. Twice monthly, the technician will travel to remote camera sites along U.S. South Highway 97 and U.S. Hwy 20 to maintain cameras at current or planned mitigation infrastructure (e.g., wildlife crossing structures, deer guards, exclusion fencing). Fieldwork involves working adjacent to moderate to high traffic volume highways and may include travel in inclement conditions, including winter driving and hiking in remote areas. |

Key Responsibilities | 85% office work: Upload images from SD cards to external hard drive and corresponding database; organize images based on mitigation infrastructure type; review camera trap images for wildlife with a specific focus on ungulates; organize tagged images based on species; rename tagged images based on project nomenclature; enter data collected from tagged images into spreadsheet(s); prepare spreadsheets for analysis; maintain inventory of reserve camera traps and accessories; assist with reporting duties, including, data summaries and data visualizations; update project area spatial data and subsequent maps as necessary, and perform basic data analysis. 10% fieldwork: Coordinate field resources (equipment and supplies), request landowner access, schedule fieldwork, reserve vehicles and lodging, plan routes, communicate with landowners, design and manage project databases, coordinate and train volunteers, and conduct field equipment inventories. Report directly to project PIs about project progress and arising issues. Twice monthly travel to U.S. Highway 97 and 20 mitigation infrastructure camera trap array sites; battery refresh; camera placement and removal; camera status data entry; camera troubleshooting, camera winterization, other field duties as needed. 5% community and partner education and outreach: Participate in and/or lead presentations based on project findings. |
What We Require | Two years of college-level courses in (specific field of biological science) and one year of experience related to the area of assignment at the Biological Research Technician 1 level; OR an equivalent combination of training and experience. |
