Position Summary
This recruitment will be used to fill one (1) part-time (a maximum of 24 hours per week) Media & Communications Technician position for the Marine and Coastal Opportunities (MACO) office at Oregon State University (OSU).

The Marine and Coastal Opportunities (MACO) office is seeking a Media & Communications Technician. This position is split between the MACO office and the Small Boat Program (SBP) office. The position supports both MACO staff and SBP staff on event coordination and logistics, communication and outreach projects, and general office tasks. This opportunity reports primarily to the MACO Administrative and Communications Coordinator. The position gives students a chance to gain the experience, knowledge, and skills to organize outreach events and produce specific media products for higher education programs in ocean-related industries.

Position Duties
50% – Assist the Marine and Coastal Opportunities (MACO) staff.
  • Event Coordination:
  • Plan MACO-hosted events, such as (but not limited to): World Ocean Day celebration, Fall Faculty Mixer, Ocean and Coasts Resource Fair, open houses, etc. under the mentorship of the MACO staff.
  • Coordinate logistical details for MACO-hosted events, such as space rentals, catering, vehicle reservations, event set-up and break-down, invitations to collaborators, staffing assignments, etc.
  • Provide event coordination services to affiliated units and act as liaison between MACO and the affiliated unit to ensure smooth operations.
  • Evaluate events afterwards to improve logistical details and streamline processes.
  • Outreach:
  • Organize MACO’s presence at public outreach and recruitment events under the mentorship of the MACO staff, including assigning staff to work shifts, balancing event schedules, and communicating with potential volunteers.
  • Interact with the public at events to represent MACO’s programs and offerings in a professional and informative manner. Equitably engage and include people from different cultures and backgrounds.
  • Media & Communications:
  • Create print and digital communications materials as requested, including but not limited to flyers, stickers, webpages, event forms, listserv announcements, bulletin board postings, etc.
  • Office Support:
  • Provide general office support such as organizing files, receiving packages, restock inventory, and supporting day-to-day office operations to help keep the program running smoothly.
  • Professional Development:
  • Develop professional and leadership skills through MACO’s student employee program, such as networking strategies.
50% – Assist the Small Boat Program (SBP) staff.
  • Event Coordination & Outreach. – Assist SBP staff with planning and participating in outreach events. This includes identifying relevant outreach opportunities, helping with logistics, engaging with the public, and representing the Small Boat Program in a professional and informative manner.
  • Media & Communications- Create and manage communication materials for SBP, including social media content, website updates, and graphic design projects. These efforts help promote the program and maintain a consistent public presence.
  • Training Support- Contribute to SBP training efforts by editing educational materials such as PowerPoint presentations and handouts. You may also occasionally assist instructors during training sessions.
  • Administrative Support- Provide general administrative assistance such as organizing files, processing paperwork, and supporting day-to-day office operations to help keep the program running smoothly.
  • Field & Operational Support- Occasionally assist with fieldwork by loading training gear, supporting activities on small research boats, and helping with basic maintenance of small boat equipment.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Must be academically enrolled in a high school, community college, or university and pursuing a program or course of study
  • Must meet Academic Standing Requirements; students on academic suspension are not eligible for employment
  • Must meet the applicable minimal enrollment standard
    • High School student: Regularly enrolled in a high school or participating in a home-schooling program
    • Undergraduate and post-baccalaureate student: 6 credit hours per term
    • Undergraduate international student: 12 credit hours per term*
    • Graduate student officially admitted to Graduate School: 5 credit hours per term
    • Graduate international student officially admitted to Graduate School: 9 credit hours per term*

*International students may be allowed to carry fewer hours than specified above and still be considered “full-time” by the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). A reduced course load is approved by the Office of International Services (OIS), and must be provided to the Student Employment Center.
Additional Required Qualifications
  • An interest in marine or coastal studies, marine biology, ocean conservation, aquatic biology or ecology, environmental sciences, or a related field.
  • Strong interpersonal skills: ability to work as a team member and effectively interact with co-workers using a collaborative style.
  • Ability to work independently, prioritize projects, and pro-actively seek solutions to challenges and guidance from supervisors
  • Must possess an exceptional eye for detail and excellent organizational skills.
  • Prior event coordination and/or public outreach experience.
  • Proficiency in Canva, Microsoft Office programs, or other similar programs and willingness to learn new software as needed.
  • Experience editing images and videos.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Valid Driver’s License

This position is designated as a critical or security-sensitive position; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a Criminal History Check and be determined to be position qualified as per OSU Standard 576-055-0000 et seq. Incumbents are required to self-report convictions and those in Youth Programs may have additional Criminal History Checks every 2 years.

This position requires driving a University vehicle or a personal vehicle on behalf of the University; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a Motor Vehicle History Check, possess and maintain a current, valid driver’s license in their state of residence, be determined to be position qualified and self-report convictions (as per Voluntary and Compulsory Driver Standards OSU Standard 125-155-0200) as per OSU Standard 576-056-0000 et seq.
Preferred (Special) Qualifications
  • Knowledge of the MACO and SBP missions and familiar with both programs’ web presences.
  • Experience with Adobe Creative Suite, Drupal web software, or other relevant software products essential for digital media creation.
  • Demonstrated experience in University extracurricular outreach activities
  • Experience with website development and/or graphic design.
  • Experience working in a professional office environment
  • Familiarity with OSU branding requirements.
  • Preference will be given to students in an undergraduate academic program at OSU who have a year or more remaining in their degree pathway.
Working Conditions / Work Schedule
  • 20 hours per week during the academic school year (10 hours/week for MACO, 10 hours/week for SBP), with the opportunity to increase hours up to 24 hours per week depending on the number of needed projects.
  • In-person work on Corvallis campus. Occasional remote work is possible as approved by supervisor and per OSU guidance and policies allowing and guiding remote work for students.
  • Normal hours are Monday through Friday. Work schedule is flexible to accommodate class schedules.
  • Periodic weekend and evening availability may be required.
  • This position has no set end date. The end date depends on the chosen candidate’s eligibility and preference to remain in the job.
  • Starting hourly rate of $15.05
  • Periodic travel to the Oregon coast may be required. Travel assistance may be provided if needed.
  • Typical office environment. Part-Time Non-Benefits Eligible.
  • May be required to maneuver up to 25 pounds of weight including boxes of paper, files and/or packages for delivery
