Position Summary
This recruitment will be used to fill 3 part-time (a maximum of 24 hours per week) Weed Science Research Technician position for the Horticulture Department at Oregon State University (OSU).

A great opportunity to assist with weed science research that focuses on finding solutions for weed management in grass seed production systems. Hired technicians will gain professional experience conducting field and laboratory experiments and collecting research data in weed science studies in grass seed production systems. Successful applicants will work independently as well as alongside USDA-ARS researchers. Detailed instructions will be provided for all tasks and no previous experience is required. This position is located at the Hyslop Research Farm at 3455 NE Granger Ave, Corvallis, OR which is approximately 8 miles from campus. Applicants must have a means of transportation to the Hyslop Research Farm. Work hours will occur within the hours of 8am to 4:30pm Monday through Friday.

Position Duties
Tasks will be varied and will include both indoor and outdoor activities related to weed science research. Examples of outdoor work include irrigation management, hand weeding trials, as well as collecting plant and seed samples. Indoor activities include cleaning and counting seeds, taking plant data, processing samples, and assisting researchers with performing experiments, such as collecting and entering research data.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Must be academically enrolled in a high school, community college, or university and pursuing a program or course of study
  • Must meet Academic Standing Requirements; students on academic suspension are not eligible for employment
  • Must meet the applicable minimal enrollment standard
    • High School student: Regularly enrolled in a high school or participating in a home-schooling program
    • Undergraduate and post-baccalaureate student: 6 credit hours per term
    • Undergraduate international student: 12 credit hours per term*
    • Graduate student officially admitted to Graduate School: 5 credit hours per term
    • Graduate international student officially admitted to Graduate School: 9 credit hours per term*

*International students may be allowed to carry fewer hours than specified above and still be considered “full-time” by the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). A reduced course load is approved by the Office of International Services (OIS), and must be provided to the Student Employment Center.
Additional Required Qualifications
Must be willing to work in an outside environment that is prone to cool and rainy conditions in the winter and hot, dry, and dusty conditions in the summer. This is a position that will sometimes require physical activity such as lifting items up to 50 pounds and walking or kneeling for extended periods. Must be able to follow instructions and be willing to work independently or in a team environment. Applicants must be students at Oregon State University, have a valid driver’s license and a means of transportation to the Hyslop Research Farm.
Preferred (Special) Qualifications
Interest in plants / horticulture / crop science and curious about research experiments.
