Position Summary
This recruitment will be used to create a pool of part-time (a maximum of 24 hours per week) Sheep Center Crew Member positions for the Department of Animal and Rangeland Sciences at Oregon State University (OSU).

The positions are based out of the off-campus Sheep Research Center.

Qualified applicants will be contacted as positions become available. The positions include animal care and maintenance of the facility and may include research and data collection.

Position Duties
The primary role of this position is to feed the animals and ensure proper health as a top priority.

Other duties include:
  • Collaborating with the farm manager and fellow student employees, as well as some individual work.
  • Monitor animal health and report concerns to the farm manager (mandatory).
  • Keep a safe, clean, and organized environment for humans and animals in the lab space and barns. This includes bedding and cleaning water troughs.
  • Facility upkeep for the main sheep barn as well as other campus locations. Build and repair fence, maintain CREP zones, and mow/weed-whack.
  • Assist with sheep management including lambing, fecal sampling animals, hoof trimming, shearing, and vaccinating, as needed.
  • Assist with setting up for labs and research studies, as needed.
  • Haul sheep between locations using the truck and trailer, as needed.
  • Drive UTV, as needed.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Must be academically enrolled in a high school, community college, or university and pursuing a program or course of study
  • Must meet Academic Standing Requirements; students on academic suspension are not eligible for employment
  • Must meet the applicable minimal enrollment standard
    • High School student: Regularly enrolled in a high school or participating in a home-schooling program
    • Undergraduate and post-baccalaureate student: 6 credit hours per term
    • Undergraduate international student: 12 credit hours per term*
    • Graduate student officially admitted to Graduate School: 5 credit hours per term
    • Graduate international student officially admitted to Graduate School: 9 credit hours per term*

*International students may be allowed to carry fewer hours than specified above and still be considered “full-time” by the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). A reduced course load is approved by the Office of International Services (OIS), and must be provided to the Student Employment Center.
Additional Required Qualifications
  • Able to lift 50 pounds.
Preferred (Special) Qualifications
  • Past experience that demonstrates the ability to work as a team
  • Experience in domestic animal husbandry
  • Farm tools and equipment operation experience preferred, but not required
  • Currently enrolled as a student at Oregon State University and/or dual enrolled with Linn Benton Community College
Working Conditions / Work Schedule
  • To be determined by the hiring unit. Conditions vary depending on location.
  • Work may be performed in one or more of the following locations: Sheep Center located off the main Corvallis campus on NW Oak Creek Drive or at the Campus Way Sheep Barns.
  • Work may also be outdoors or in a laboratory.
  • Employees may be exposed to noxious odors, infectious diseases, gas anesthetics, loud noises, wet and slippery floors, and machinery.
  • Employees may be exposed to extreme and inclement weather conditions.
  • Employees may need to maneuver up to 50 lbs. and may be required to stoop, bend and kneel on hard floors as necessary to provide care for animals.
  • Flexible hours as needed to complete experiments/projects or care for the animals.
