Position Summary
This recruitment will be used to fill six (6) part-time (a maximum of 24 hours per week) GIS-STEP Intern position for the College of Earth, Ocean & Atmospheric Sciences at Oregon State University (OSU).

The Geospatial Internship & Skills Training for Employment and Professional development (GIS-STEP) program seeks to address the skills gap in the geospatial technology industry by providing training and workforce development opportunities, particularly supporting communities of color, low-income communities, and rural or frontier areas. The program aims to reskill and upskill incumbent workers, preparing them for careers in the geospatial information and technology sectors. By offering technical training, career readiness support, and hands-on internship experiences, GIS-STEP helps participants build the expertise needed to enter and succeed in this growing field.

GIS-STEP scholars will participate for one year in a mix of in-person and/or online courses, career development workshops, and a paid GIS internship. The program will cover tuition, fees, and textbooks.
Position Duties
As a participant in GIS-STEP, you will participate in all university and industry activities associated with the program, as well as continue to maintain a good academic standing. By participating you will benefit from career development seminars, informational sessions, and gaining knowledge about the companies involved throughout the program. Students who continue to meet program requirements are eligible to receive a paid three-month internship that provides a hands-on learning experience.
1. Attend the Student Seminars. These webinars will introduce you to the program and cover various topics regarding participation.

3. Complete any required courses prior to your internship
4. Keep your contact information up to date online
5. Complete one, 3-month internship
Minimum Qualifications
  • Must be academically enrolled in a high school, community college, or university and pursuing a program or course of study
  • Must meet Academic Standing Requirements; students on academic suspension are not eligible for employment
  • Must meet the applicable minimal enrollment standard
    • High School student: Regularly enrolled in a high school or participating in a home-schooling program
    • Undergraduate and post-baccalaureate student: 6 credit hours per term
    • Undergraduate international student: 12 credit hours per term*
    • Graduate student officially admitted to Graduate School: 5 credit hours per term
    • Graduate international student officially admitted to Graduate School: 9 credit hours per term*

*International students may be allowed to carry fewer hours than specified above and still be considered “full-time” by the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). A reduced course load is approved by the Office of International Services (OIS), and must be provided to the Student Employment Center.
Additional Required Qualifications

  • Must be at least 18 years of age by start date
  • Students who are currently enrolled at BMCC, COCC, OSU; Prospective students who are not currently enrolled but plan on applying. Acceptance into GIS-STEP program is dependent on acceptance into one of the three schools
  • Interest in receiving a credential in a GIScience field: GIS certificate, UAS certificate, GIS AAS, UAS AAS, GIS AS, Precision Agriculture (AAS); The GIS-STEP program will pay for books, fees and tuition for courses in the credential up to June 2026.
  • Willingness to learn and follow office policies and/or standard employer procedures at internship site
  • Valid U.S. Driver’s license (if required by internship)
