Position Summary
This recruitment will be used to fill one part-time Undergraduate Research Assistant position for the TallWood Design Institute (TDI) at the A.A. Red Emmerson Advanced Wood Products Laboratory, an applied research, education, and testing facility on the Oregon State University
(OSU) campus in Corvallis.

This position provides technical lab support to and takes direction from the Laboratory
Technician, Structural Testing Coordinator and the Technical & Operations Manager.
Position Duties
  • Ensure lab facilities are clean and orderly.
  • Assist in the fabrication of wood products for testing or assembly.
  • Assist with storing and moving materials throughout the lab.
  • Assist in structural testing of materials and building systems.
  • Assist with erecting and dismantling large test setups.
  • Documentation of operations, and the collection of data for testing operations.
  • Manage data in Microsoft Excel, Matlab, or Python.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Must be academically enrolled in a high school, community college, or university and pursuing a program or course of study
  • Must meet Academic Standing Requirements; students on academic suspension are not eligible for employment
  • Must meet the applicable minimal enrollment standard
    • High School student: Regularly enrolled in a high school or participating in a home-schooling program
    • Undergraduate and post-baccalaureate student: 6 credit hours per term
    • Undergraduate international student: 12 credit hours per term*
    • Graduate student officially admitted to Graduate School: 5 credit hours per term
    • Graduate international student officially admitted to Graduate School: 9 credit hours per term*

*International students may be allowed to carry fewer hours than specified above and still be considered “full-time” by the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). A reduced course load is approved by the Office of International Services (OIS), and must be provided to the Student Employment Center.
Additional Required Qualifications
  • Student in good academic standing
  • Students must complete all employee and safety trainings required by the Tallwood Design Institute and Oregon State University.
  • Excellent attention to detail.
  • Must be able to work both independently and in team environments.
Preferred (Special) Qualifications
  • Experience using hand and power tools, such as saws and drills.
  • Possesses an interest in manufacturing, construction, and structural testing processes.
  • Possesses a basic knowledge of wood products.
Working Conditions / Work Schedule
  • Physical Requirements:
  • Able to climb ladders, and work at heights.
  • Able to stand for long periods of time.
  • Able to work in a dusty, sometimes loud environment.
  • Must be able to work in a minimally conditioned space and occasionally work outdoors in the lab’s yard in inclement weather.
  • Must be able to work with and around chemicals, solvents and lubricants used in equipment maintenance
