Position Summary
This recruitment will be used to create a pool of part-time (a maximum of 24 hours per week during the school year; higher during holidays and summer break) Horse Center Crew Member positions for the Department of Animal and Rangeland Sciences at Oregon State University (OSU).

This position is for the care and maintenance of horses. Typical duties include cleaning stalls, feeding, watering, and handling of horses. The employee will perform weekly tasks and projects around the Horse Center, as needed. Employees are expected to work every other weekend and partial holidays. Employee must be available to work weekdays between 5:30 am – 8 am.

Work is performed in barns and outdoors at the OSU Horse Center located on NW Walnut Dr. in Corvallis, OR.
Position Duties
  • Cleaning stalls, paddocks, and aisles in barns.
  • Maintaining horse stall bedding.
  • Following feed schedule and guidelines.
  • Assisting with putting out horses from barns to pastures or bringing them back in at night.
  • Assisting with maintaining the facility.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Must be academically enrolled in a high school, community college, or university and pursuing a program or course of study
  • Must meet Academic Standing Requirements; students on academic suspension are not eligible for employment
  • Must meet the applicable minimal enrollment standard
    • High School student: Regularly enrolled in a high school or participating in a home-schooling program
    • Undergraduate and post-baccalaureate student: 6 credit hours per term
    • Undergraduate international student: 12 credit hours per term*
    • Graduate student officially admitted to Graduate School: 5 credit hours per term
    • Graduate international student officially admitted to Graduate School: 9 credit hours per term*

*International students may be allowed to carry fewer hours than specified above and still be considered “full-time” by the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). A reduced course load is approved by the Office of International Services (OIS), and must be provided to the Student Employment Center.
Additional Required Qualifications
  • Must be dependable, possess a strong work ethic, and be able to work without supervision in a team setting.
  • Must possess strong communication skills and the ability to follow directions.
  • Have a willingness to learn and complete any and all assigned tasks.
  • Because the work location is off-campus, employees must have a reliable form of motorized transportation to get to the horse center facilities.

This position is designated as a critical or security-sensitive position; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a criminal history check and be determined to be position qualified as per OSU Standard 576-055-0000 et seq. Incumbents are required to self-report convictions and those in youth programs may have additional criminal history checks every 24 months.
Preferred (Special) Qualifications
Preference will be given to student applicants who have previous experience working with horses including:
  • The ability to recognize illness, colic, lameness, or other ailments.
  • Experience handling a wide variety of horses including young stock.
  • Aptitude to recognize behavior changes.
  • Knowledge of feed identification and nutrition basics.
  • Basic equine first aid skills.
