The Electrical Engineer provides highly technical engineering services for the planning, design, procurement, and construction of pipeline and/or compression projects for Northern Natural Gas Company’s pipeline system. This position leads the development of project drawings and documents for the design and construction of electrical equipment. Work involves execution-focused, technically challenging projects delivered in a fast-paced, multi-discipline team environment. The position level (Senior Engineer or Senior Engineer II) will be determined based on the candidate’s qualifications and experience.

- Bachelor’s degree in mechanical or civil engineering from an accredited institution.
- Sr Engineer - Minimum five or more years of experience in electrical engineering (experience in the utility, pipeline, or energy industry preferred)
- Sr Engineer II – Eight or more years of experience in electrical engineering (experience in the utility, pipeline, or energy industry preferred)
- Must have significant engineering knowledge of natural gas industry related to the design and installation of pipelines, compressor stations and process equipment.
- Effective oral and written communication skills.
- Strong technical writing skills including the ability to communicate a basic understanding of technical information to non-technical people.
- Effective analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Project management skills; ability to prioritize and handle multiple tasks and projects concurrently.
- Cross functional skills; ability and willingness to cross over to construction coordination or project management work on specific projects.
- Critical thinking and decision-making skills to develop and present technical recommendations.
Preferred Qualifications
- Professional Engineer (PE) license or ability to obtain licensure.
- In-depth knowledge of the National Electrical Code (NEC) and applicable industry electrical standards.
- Experience serving as a technical lead or mentoring less experienced engineers.
- Experience performing advanced engineering analysis, feasibility studies, and economic evaluations.
- Strong planning, organizational, and project management skills.
- Experience with natural gas pipeline, compression, or similar heavy industrial facilities.
- Experience with SCADA systems, control systems integration, emergency generation systems, and electrical safety-related projects.
Initiate, coordinate, design, and implement electrical engineering projects in support of natural gas pipeline and compression facilities.
Lead the development of project drawings and construction documents for electrical equipment and systems.
Provide engineering and technical direction to pipeline operations and operations & maintenance functions.
Conduct engineering studies, technical evaluations, and investigations; prepare clear and effective oral and written reports.
Apply a strong working knowledge of the National Electrical Code (NEC) and other applicable industry electrical standards, ensuring design compliance.
Provide technical guidance to third-party installation contractors and site operations and maintenance personnel regarding adherence to electrical standards.
Manage multiple concurrent projects and meet project schedules, budgets, and quality expectations.
Collaborate with site personnel to define project scope and develop cost and schedule estimates.
Work with designers to provide technical guidance, review drawings, develop specifications, procure materials, and support FAT, construction, and commissioning.
Coordinate with third-party automation integrators to ensure compliance with Northern Natural Gas standards and provide commissioning support.
Perform economic and technical feasibility studies and make engineering recommendations.
Provide engineering assistance to other departments and support project planning efforts.
Stay informed of industry issues, regulatory requirements, and technical trends that may benefit the company.
