This position performs technical substation work in support of relay, meter, and control systems across the BHE Renewables generation fleet. The Traveling Substation Technician I applies standard practices to routine substation testing, maintenance, and commissioning activities and may assist with contractor oversight and project coordination while emphasizing safety, Human Performance Improvement (HPI) tools, and continuous learning.

Six or more years experience in the relay and meter trade. High school diploma or GED; equivalent combination of education and experience. Completion of, or enrollment in, an electrical apprenticeship, BS in Electrical Engineering or equivalent training program preferred.
Fundamental knowledge of electrical theory and substation equipment.
Ability to learn relay, control, and metering systems.
Basic computer skills, including use of testing software and Microsoft Office.
Effective written and verbal communication skills.
Ability to work safely in energized environments, confined spaces, and at heights.
Project management skills; ability to prioritize and handle multiple tasks and projects concurrently.
Effective oral and written communication skills.
Effective analytical and problem-solving skills.
Valid driver’s license required.
Travel is required due to the geographic location of BHE Renewables assets.


Assist with installation, commissioning, maintenance, testing, adjustment, troubleshooting, and repair of substation equipment.
Support testing of protective relays, programmable substation equipment, PLCs and automation controllers, meters, batteries, UPSes, control circuits, and associated substation apparatus under supervision.
Perform routine maintenance and inspections on substation equipment including breakers, transformers, regulators, capacitors, reactors, and related systems.
Assist with testing processes such as insulation resistance (megger), transformer ratio testing, power factor testing, and related analytical tests.
Participate in switching and grounding activities as qualified and directed.
Use and maintain assigned tools, test equipment, and materials in accordance with company standards.
Comply with all safety rules, procedures, and regulatory requirements.
Travel extensively to BHE Renewables facilities to support substation operations and projects.
