Position Title: Forestry Technician (Trails) Individual Placement – 680 HR
Position Summary:
The Idaho Panhandle National Forest, Priest Lake Ranger District is recruiting up to four 480 to 680 Hour Forestry Technician (Trails) Individual Placements beginning May/June through August/September. Incumbent will primarily maintain trails and some recreation facilities on the district. This placement will typically work four ten-hour days per week Mondays through Thursday.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Duties will include serving with FS employees maintaining, constructing, and clearing trails (75%), maintaining campgrounds and recreational sites (15%), and cleaning and maintaining tools and equipment (10%). This requires hiking/ working outdoors with a small crew of 6, and/or independently. Projects will include trail construction, trail maintenance using chainsaws and hand tools, recreation facility improvements, forestry related tasks, constructing bridges and boardwalks, and other carpentry projects. There may also be one or two overnight spike camps as well as one week-long backcountry trail work camps that will require tent camping and backpacking gear (provided by FS if needed).
Required Qualifications:
- Ages 18-30 (up to 35 for veterans)
- U.S. Citizen or lawful, permanent resident
- Must pass a background/driver check
- Must have a high school diploma or GED
- Willingness to work as part of a small team
- Good written and verbal communication skills
- Chainsaw experience or a willingness to learn
- A positive attitude
- Current driver's license
- Ability to lift and carry 50lbs
- Ability to work outdoors in remote settings and inclement weather on uneven ground
- Ability to hike 5-10 miles in a day in rugged country
- Personal transportation
Desired Qualifications:
- Attention to detail.
- Physically fit for long days of hard work.
- Experience with hand tools and basic carpentry.
- Coursework in recreation management, forestry, natural resources or related field.
- A strong interest in resource management.
Duty/Housing Location:
Duties are performed out of the Priest Lake Ranger District Office located in Nordman, Idaho. Housing is available via the Forest Service bunkhouse apartments, but space is limited. Bunkhouse apartments are currently at $10.21 per day. They feature a furnished bedroom, a community bath and a cookhouse located in an adjacent building.
Terms of Employment:
One Individual Placement will complete a term of service (17-weeks), starting Mid-May through early September 2026 There will also be an opportunity for (12 weeks), starting in June through August 2026. The Individual Placemen must complete a minimum of 680 service hours by the end of their term.
Program Benefits:
Individual Placements will earn $10,800 living allowance dispersed on a monthly basis throughout the 17 weeks. The position also includes a $500 gear reimbursement and a housing fund is available.
The living allowance is taxable. Individual Placements are responsible for providing their own food. Service eligibility is contingent upon the results of a criminal background check.
