About the NFF: As the official national partner to the US Forest Service (USFS), the National Forest Foundation was chartered by Congress in 1993. Today, the NFF advances forest resiliency, healthy watersheds and wildlife habitat, and recreation for all by working with communities and organizations across the country. The Foundation has grown significantly in the last few years in programmatic impact, revenue, support, and organizational capacity. NFF leads with impact, deploying roughly 90% of its expenses towards projects and programs across the country’s 193-million-acre National Forest System. NFF is forward-thinking and innovative, with ambitious strategies and goals to advance and prepare forests for a new economy.

Position Function: The Director of Marketing reports to the Chief Marketing Officer and is both a story amplifier and a behavior influencer. Taking NFF's mission and turning it into campaigns that inspire action across digital and in-person channels. Through growth marketing strategies, this role will lead our email communications, social media presence, and marketing activations (both local field marketing efforts and national campaigns), building a movement of forest stewards who engage, give, and act. Success means growing audiences, deepening engagement, attracting new donors, and creating memorable connections to our mission. This is a hands-on leadership role for someone who thinks strategically and loves diving into the details to ensure we're achieving results. Combining big-picture vision with the drive to execute, test, analyze, achieve, and continuously improve.

Position Duties and Responsibilities: The Director of Marketing will lead, plan, collaborate, implement, measure, and continuously improve and evolve as outlined below.

Strategic Leadership & Planning

  • Develop and own the marketing strategy to grow awareness, engagement, and support for NFF's mission
  • Collaborate with partners at the United States Forest Service to ensure alignment of messaging and communication
  • Set clear growth goals and success metrics across email, social media, and in-person activations
  • Identify emerging trends, new channels, and growth opportunities to reach new audiences and deepen connections with existing supporters
  • Serve as a brand steward, ensuring all marketing creative is consistent with NFF's brand look, feel, and voice
  • Experiment with and integrate AI tools into workflows to improve efficiency, effectiveness, and innovation

Team Leadership & Collaboration

  • Build, lead, and develop a high-performing marketing team of 4 to 6 staff, including direct oversight of email marketing, social media, and field marketing staff
  • Partner closely with Advancement, Programs, and Conservation teams to create cohesive messaging and campaigns
  • Manage agency and vendor relationships, budgets, and timelines

Email Marketing

  • Lead email strategy and execution across the full lifecycle including acquisition, welcome, nurture, campaigns, and re-engagement
  • Build segmentation and personalization strategies to increase relevance and response
  • Design and implement A/B and multivariate tests to optimize performance
  • Grow email subscriber base and improve engagement metrics (open rates, click-through rates, conversions)

Social Media & Content

  • Oversee social media strategy and content across platforms including Instagram, TikTok, LinkedIn, YouTube, X, and new platforms as they emerge
  • Drive follower growth and engagement through compelling storytelling and community management
  • Develop and manage creator/influencer partnerships and user-generated content programs
  • Lead content creation and governance, ensuring consistency in voice, visuals, and accessibility

Marketing Activations

  • Coordinate local field marketing activations through regional team members to create on-the-ground connections with communities
  • Plan and execute national marketing activations that raise awareness and engagement at scale
  • Measure attendance, engagement, and impact of in-person marketing efforts

Paid Media & Campaign Management

  • Oversee paid media strategy and execution in collaboration with agency partners and content strategy staff
  • Schedule and implement paid media campaigns across appropriate channels to maximize reach and impact
  • Track paid media KPIs and optimize campaigns for cost-effectiveness and performance

Analytics, Testing & Continuous Improvement

  • Use data and analytics to inform strategy, optimize campaigns, and uncover insights
  • Build dashboards and reporting to track KPIs including audience growth, engagement, conversions, and donor acquisition
  • Foster a culture of experimentation and learning to continuously improve performance

Education and Qualifications: NFF expects the Director of Marketing to possess the following educational and experiential qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Marketing, Communications, Business, a related field (Postgraduate degree preferred), or equivalent experience.
  • 8 to 10 years of progressive experience in digital marketing, with at least 3 years in a leadership role
  • Proven track record developing and executing integrated marketing strategies that drive measurable growth
  • Deep expertise with email marketing platforms, social media tools, and analytics (e.g., Google Analytics, Salesforce, HubSpot, social listening/scheduling tools)
  • Experience with A/B testing, segmentation, personalization, and campaign optimization
  • Understanding of compliance requirements (CAN-SPAM, CASL, GDPR/CCPA) and email deliverability best practices
  • Must be authorized to work in the United States

Travel: This position requires occasional domestic travel to attend meetings, trainings, convenings, and related events. The travel estimate for this position is up to 25% per year.

Location: The location for this position is flexible throughout the lower 48 states. This position is a remote/work-from-home position and requires reliable internet access and a dedicated workspace.

Compensation: NFF offers a competitive compensation and benefits package that reflects our total rewards strategy. The starting salary range for this position is $103,750 to $128,000, with the ability to grow to $142,000 based on performance outcomes over time and assessed annually.
