The Opportunity

WSDOT is seeking a non-permanent IT Support Technician to provide entry-level, hands-on information technology support within the Technology Services Division at Washington State Ferries (WSF). In this role, you will contribute to the agency’s mission by supporting reliable, day-to-day technology services that enable safe, efficient ferry operations and customer service. Under the guidance of experienced Field Services staff, you will assist with customer support, device setup, and routine troubleshooting while following established procedures and work instructions. This role offers valuable exposure to public-sector IT operations and the critical role technology plays in a transportation environment. A strong candidate will demonstrate effective communication, customer service orientation, basic technical aptitude, and a willingness to learn and adapt in a team-oriented setting.

This role also offers the opportunity to step outside the traditional office setting and support IT operations in the field at ferry terminals, vessels, and other WSF facilities. These hands-on experiences provide valuable exposure to real-world technology deployments and the critical systems that keep Washington State Ferries running safely and efficiently.

What to Expect

Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, the IT Support Technician 1 will:

  • Serve as a first point of contact for basic IT support.
  • Provide non-technical and limited first-level technical assistance to end users.
  • Assist users in person and remotely by following documented troubleshooting steps to resolve routine issues
  • Assist with imaging and deployment of end-user devices.
  • Assist with the setup, deployment, and replacement of IT equipment such as desktops, laptops, monitors, printers, and mobile devices using standard configurations and checklists.
  • Support on-site IT activities at terminals, vessels offices, and other facilities by transporting, installing, and testing equipment under supervision.
  • Create, update, and close Helix service tickets.
  • Assist with maintaining basic IT documentation; follow documented procedures technical handbook, and desk manuals.

Qualifications

To be considered for this opportunity, the following competencies are required:

  • Learning Mindset: Currently enrolled or recent graduate of an accredited educational institution for an undergraduate IT-related academic degree program.
  • Basic IT Support: Experience using and supporting common computer hardware and software in a personal, academic, or work environment.
  • Technical Troubleshooting: Ability to troubleshoot basic technical issues related to desktop computers, laptops, mobile devices, peripherals, and standard office applications by following documented procedures.
  • IT Equipment Familiarity: Experience with IT equipment such as desktop computers, laptops, monitors, printers, docking stations, and mobile devices.
  • Growth Mindset: Actively demonstrates a commitment to learning and growth.
  • Service-Oriented: Takes action to meet the needs of others.

The following qualifications are also required:

  • A valid driver’s license and the ability to maintain a good driving record to respond promptly to field support requests at any WSF location.

It is preferred that qualified candidates also demonstrate:

  • Systems and Applications Familiarity: Familiarity with Windows operating systems, Microsoft 365 applications, and basic networking concepts.
  • Foundational IT Knowledge: Coursework, training, or certifications related to information technology, computer hardware, networking, or technical support.
  • Service Desk Tools: Experience using a service desk or ticketing system to track support requests.

  • This is a non-permanent position, expected to last 3 – 5 months.
  • This recruitment may also be used to fill additional positions per business needs.
  • In addition to base salary, employees may be entitled to other forms of compensation depending on the type, duties, or location of the position.
