The Opportunity

WSDOT is seeking a non-permanent IT Support Technician to assist with the planning, documentation, and daily operation of the agency’s statewide voice, data, video, and fiber optic infrastructure that enables critical transportation systems and mission-essential facilities. Working under close supervision and alongside senior technical staff, this role will provide paraprofessional support for network planning, staging, testing, configuration, installation, monitoring, and troubleshooting of LAN, WAN, and fiber systems, support asset management and GIS-based fiber records, and help maintaining accurate documentation, performance metrics, and outage information while coordinating with internal teams, vendors, and partner agencies. The position offers hands-on exposure to field and enterprise environments while building foundational operational knowledge and technical capability. Our top candidate will demonstrate basic networking and fiber optic fundamentals, troubleshooting aptitude, effective communication, and the ability to follow established standards and procedures in a collaborative, service-oriented environment.

What to Expect

Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, the IT Support Technician 1 will:

  • Assist in maintaining accurate records of agency-owned and leased fiber optic infrastructure under direct supervision.
  • Provide hands-on technical support for routine, day-to-day fiber and network operations within established procedures/processes while learning operational standards and procedures.
  • Support field-based verification and learning activities alongside fiber operations staff and installation crews.
  • Assist with coordination and communication tasks related to fiber services, vendors, and partner agencies.
  • Support network and fiber monitoring efforts by collecting and organizing operational data.
  • Develop foundational knowledge of fiber optic systems, telecommunications infrastructure, and agency operations.

Qualifications

To be considered for this opportunity, the following competencies are required:

  • Learning Mindset: Meets the education eligibility requirements for student employment (internship) as outlined in RCW 43.06.420 and currently enrolled in an accredited educational institution for an undergraduate IT-related academic degree program.

The following qualifications are also required:

  • The ability to climb ladders and crawl on hands and knees to reach difficult locations.
  • Ability to maneuver and transport various materials and/or equipment weighing up to 50 pounds.

It is preferred that qualified candidates also demonstrate:

  • Telecommunications Infrastructure Installation: Experience with cabling, wiring, fiber optics, and/or networking and the ability to be comfortable in small spaces and in spaces with moderate heights

  • This is a non-permanent position, expected to last approximately 3 – 5 months.

  • In addition to base salary, employees may be entitled to other forms of compensation depending on the type, duties, or location of the position.   • This position is not eligible for remote work.
