Industrial Hygienists and Safety & Health Professionals will be compensated basic salary plus 10%for each hour they are required to use personal protective equipment (excluding hard hats, boots, hearing and eye protection) to enter a hazardous worksite to consult, inspect or investigate where serious hazards are present.

If hired as bilingual (not required), after passing an assessment of your ability to write and speak fluently. We do not use translating software. Employees with bilingual responsibilities receive a 5% increase in pay.

At the Department of Labor & Industries (L&I), we’re on a mission to make workplaces across Washington safer and healthier. The Division of Occupational Safety and Health (DOSH) is seeking a CISHI5-Safety Supervisor- Logging to join our Compliance Program. You’ll use your expertise in logging to help businesses identify hazards, strengthen safety programs, and comply with WISHA and OSHA standards. You’ll work directly with employers to create safer workplaces, preventing injuries, saving lives, and supporting Washington’s vibrant workforce. Additionally, you’ll be vital in training, mentoring and supervising our Logging Safety employees here at L&I.

This position supervises logging safety compliance staff located across the state. The supervisor leads a team of 2–5 investigators, providing training, mentoring, and day-to-day guidance to help them succeed in their roles.

As the logging industry safety expert for the unit, this position reviews and approves most of the inspections completed by the team to ensure findings, evidence, and penalties are accurate and well supported. They also monitor staff performance, help employees meet their goals, and hold them accountable for their work.

In addition to supervisory duties, this position may conduct inspections and provide direct support to investigators during complex inspections or investigations.

For this position, teleworking is permitted on occasion dependent upon business needs and supervisor approval. The assigned duty station can be in any of our L&I offices in Western, WA (Regions 1, 2, 3, or 4).

Duties

What You’ll Do

  • Oversee the work unit with multiple logging safety staff at lower CISHI levels. Performs supervisor functions to ensure program expectations are followed and that staff is following all agency and DOSH expectations.
  • Evaluate inspection reports for completeness and accuracy.
  • Develop, administer, plan, and manage the integrity and quality of regional safety compliance (DOSH) activities to ensure the uniform application of and minimum adherence to applicable current and newly adopted laws, rules, codes, policies, procedures and regulations.

Driving is required as part of this job, and the incumbent must drive in order to perform the duties of their position. Driving is a duty mentioned in the position description. Therefore, incumbents must use a state-issued vehicle, motor pool vehicle, or personally owned vehicle (POV) in order to perform the duties and responsibilities of their position. Use of a POV will be reimbursed with the current mileage reimbursement rate.

Must be physically capable to walk through a variety of workplaces with extensive land area and rough terrain, be able to observe and avoid danger tree hazards, climb fixed ladders or footings/hand-grabs on heavy equipment and tower yarders, stand and/or walk for long durations. Must also be able to be exposed to inclement weather (wearing appropriate weather gear) for long durations.

Who We’re Looking For

You are someone with expert knowledge of safety and health rules and regulations. You’re a leader who is ready to mentor, coach and guide a highly technical staff. You have strong written, verbal, and interpersonal skills and possess proven abilities to create positive relationships with internal and external customers.

We’re seeking candidates who demonstrate:

  • Knowledge of industry standards and experience applying WISHA/OSHA rules.
  • Hands-on experience in trades, construction, or industrial operations.
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to build rapport and deliver complex information clearly.

Qualifications

REQUIRED:

  • A valid and unrestricted driver's license
  • The ability to take action to learn and grow
  • The ability to take action to meet the needs of others
  • Five or more years of experience in the logging industry, with at least three years as a foreman or lead-person directing cutting crews, mechanized cutting, or other logging site operations.

And one of the following:

  • Six years’ experience as a DOSH Compliance Industrial Safety and Health Investigator, one of which must be at the CISHI 3 or 4 level or equivalent experience as a Federal OSHA or other state plan journey-level safety and health specialist or industrial hygienist.

OR

  • Seven years of full-time experience as an employer’s safety director or manager, industrial hygienist, safety and health specialist, safety and health specialist, etc.

OR

  • Eight years of full-time journey level occupational/industrial safety experience in one or more of the following industries: Government, military, public health or related safety and health field.
