GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES: This position is designed to lead a crew of Agriculture Program Assistants. The Crew Leader will be required to drive the Program Assistant to and from work sites, provide motivation and direction for agricultural activities, and ensure crew safety. The Agriculture Crew Leader will assist with the implementation of the garden and grant projects. The Ag Crew Leader will assist and provide direction with the planning, planting, growing, harvesting, washing, and processing of vegetable crops throughout the growing season with sustainable farming methods. The Ag Crew Leader will assist with documenting harvest totals, helping to write grant project summaries, and attend required trainings. At the end of the growing season, the Ag Crew Leader will help winterize the garden and growing beds.
STANDARD QUALIFICATIONS:
All employees of Stockbridge Munsee Community must meet the following qualification:
1. Must submit to and pass a pre-employment drug and health screening. Must adhere to the Tribe’s Drug and Alcohol Free Workplace Policy during the course of employment.
2. Must be at least 18 years of age, unless otherwise stated on job description.
3. Must maintain an acceptable departmental attendance record.
4. Must be able to work weekends, nights, and holidays.
5. Must obtain and maintain Elder/Youth License as stated on job description.
DUTIES:
1. Assist the Agriculture Manager and Farm Supervisor in proper growing and maintenance of a vegetable garden space used for educational purposes. Tasks vary dependent upon season, but not limited to: Spring: seed starting, planting, bed prep, etc., Summer: weeding, planting, harvesting, washing produce, assisting with farm market, washing bins, etc., Fall: harvest, traditional foods drying, winterizing, etc., Winter: seed starting, traditional foods processing, grant project development, organizing, garden planning, etc.
2. Drive Ag Program Assistant to and from work sites.
3. Delegate work projects to Ag Program Apprentices as directed by Farm Supervisor, Traditional Foods Supervisor, and Ag Manager.
4. Maintain plants, harvest, wash and sanitation logs.
5. Must use safe food handling practices with harvest and post-harvest produce.
6. Participate in Field Day demonstrations.
7. Must have ability to maintain work-related records and reports.
8. Fulfill other duties as assigned to complete grant projects.
9. Must be reliable and prompt when reporting to work.
10. Must adhere to tribal law and other applicable laws as well as tribal personnel policies and procedures.
QUALIFICATIONS:
1. Must have experience in vegetable production.
a. Preference to those with experience at SMC’s Tribal Farm and/or produce farms.
2. Must have an interest in Agriculture, Horticulture, Sustainable Food Systems, Sustainable Development, or related field.
a. Preference to those with basic gardening practices.
3. Must be able to handle food safely.
4. Must be able to meet physical requirements of position. Duties require rigorous physical exertion including, but not limited to, traversing uneven, rugged terrain in inclement weather.
5. Must possess physical ability to perform field duties and to receive and carry out directions.
6. Must have excellent communication and leadership skills.
7. Preference to those with record keeping and using Microsoft Excel.
8. Desire to promote local food systems and food sovereignty.
- Must have a valid driver’s license, reliable transportation, and insurance are required. Must obtain a Wisconsin driver’s license within 30 days of employment if applicant has an out-of-state driver’s license. Must meet and maintain the eligibility to operate a personal or tribal vehicle under the driver acceptability guidelines as established by Mohican Nation Insurance.
10. Must pass pre-employment drug and health screening. Must adhere to the Tribe’s Drug and Alcohol Free Workplace Policy during the course of employment.
11. Must be eligible for coverage under the employer’s liability insurance.
12. Must have demonstrated ability to maintain satisfactory working record in any prior or current employment.
- Must abide by departmental and organizational safety, testing, and uniform guidelines.
14. Must be at least 18 years of age.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS/WORK ENVIRONMENT
1. This position requires a lot of sitting with occasionally stoop, kneel, crouch, and lift and/or move up to fifty (50) pounds during summer heat.
2. Work one-two evenings/month may be required.
3. Work environment requires excellent personal hygiene due to working in close proximity to others and in an enclosed area.
4. A Tuberculosis (TB) Screening and/or TB Skin Test may be required.
5. Beekeeping takes place at the farm. Must be prepared to be around bees.
