Machine Learning & GIS Specialist
Employment Type: Full Time
Location: Remote (Calgary preferred)
Flash Forest is a reforestation company that uses aerial mapping software, drone technology, automation, ecological science, and a lot of passion to reforest post-wildfire areas at a rapid pace. We accelerate the rate of reforestation worldwide. Instead of humans on the ground, we transfer the hard labour to drones. Living in the age of technology, we harness data, machine learning, and spatial analytics to restore entire ecosystems and deliver scalable forestry intelligence. Flash Forest is here to tip the scales in the global ecological crisis.
With our primary location in Mississauga, we are excited to welcome you as part of our growing team as we expand across Canada and the United States. This role is primarily remote, with occasional travel for collaboration, field validation, or internal planning sessions. Preference will be given to candidates from Alberta, ideally Calgary, for their ability to visit our Western Office.
Your Contribution
You are a technically strong and intellectually curious individual with experience in machine learning, GIS, or spatial analytics who is motivated by applying advanced technology to real-world environmental challenges. You enjoy working in fast-paced, early-stage environments where problems are not always well defined and solutions must be built iteratively.
You are comfortable working across research and applied delivery, translating models and analysis into tools and outputs that can be used by internal teams and clients. You communicate clearly with both technical and non-technical colleagues and are motivated by seeing your work deployed in production environments.
As a Machine Learning & GIS Specialist, you will report to Owen and work closely with engineering, operations, and commercial teams to support the development and delivery of Flash Forest’s Free-to-Grow and Vegetation Intelligence offerings.
Flash Forest is a growing and dynamic company. As such, you will be expected to complete other duties as assigned and remain flexible in the scope of work undertaken. This role assumes adaptability and a willingness to work across evolving priorities.
Role & Responsibility
You will support the development, deployment, and scaling of Flash Forest’s data-driven forestry intelligence products. Responsibilities include:
- Support the development and refinement of machine learning models for:
- Free-to-Grow assessments
- Vegetation classification and change detection
- Prepare, clean, and manage spatial datasets including LiDAR, aerial imagery, and other remote sensing inputs
- Conduct GIS analysis to support site-level assessments, pilots, and client deliverables
- Assist with model validation, accuracy assessments, and performance tracking
- Translate research and model outputs into operational workflows and client-ready outputs
- Support internal software and tooling used for Vegetation Intelligence delivery
- Collaborate with Owen to understand system architecture, design decisions, and product roadmap
- Provide technical support for sales and client delivery where analytical credibility is required
- Document methodologies, assumptions, and processes to support repeatability and scale
Competencies & Qualifications
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Machine Learning, Data Science, GIS, Computer Science, Environmental Science, or a related field
- Hands-on experience with machine learning techniques, particularly classification or computer vision
- Experience with Python is required
- Experience working with spatial data and GIS tools
- Familiarity with remote sensing data such as LiDAR, multispectral, or aerial imagery is an asset
- Experience with lidar and photogrammetry processing workflows is a strong asset
- RPAS license / piloting experience is a strong asset
- Ability to work independently and manage multiple tasks concurrently
- Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail
- Experience working in a startup, research-to-product, or fast-paced environment is an asset
- Forestry, ecology, or environmental analytics experience is an asset but not required
