Job Summary
This position supports the communications, public affairs, thought leadership and internal/external strategy and positioning for Duke Energy’s CEO to advance the company’s business objectives. This position will also help shape executive positioning and provide communications support for key enterprise, national and federal priorities, in conjunction with the relevant business partners.
Core responsibilities include developing and implementing strategies to effectively position the CEO and other senior leaders internally/externally; speechwriting and developing associated briefing materials; writing employee and business communications; planning and preparing for external and internal speaking engagements; support of internal leadership team meetings and conferences. Core responsibilities also extend to support for national and federal business priorities, including communications support, public affairs planning/implementation, and media relations for national and federal outlets, in partnership with the Federal Communications & National Media teams.
The Senior Communications Manager requires in-depth communications knowledge and experience, and the ability to coordinate complex communications workstreams.
The role is expected to work both independently and in a team environment, including direct and frequent interactions with senior executives, manage multiple high-profile, high-priority projects concurrently and adapt quickly to changes in priorities and schedules.
The role reports to the Manager of Executive Communications and CEO Positioning.
Responsibilities
Draft speeches, scripts, talking points, key messaging, briefing materials, letters and other communications for CEO
Understand the message that needs to be delivered, the audiences and stakeholders for who the message is intended and the channel(s) that will be employed to deliver the message
Develop strategic communications plans and approaches for CEO that support the company’s goals
Work with executives and support staff to execute CEO positioning plan
Respond to and execute collateral/asset development with direction from the Federal Affairs, Sustainability and Philanthropy team; work with relevant Corporate Communications teammates to execute requests
Draft social and long form content
Execute communications strategy across owned, paid and earned media with direction and support
Stay up-to-date on company and industry-related issues and develop communications strategies to address these issues
Participate in emergency event drills and training, and support emergency/response efforts as needed
Basic Qualifications
Bachelors Degree (or higher) in Communications, Public Relations, Journalism or other related degree
Minimum required related experience -- 5 years
In lieu of degree: High School/GED AND at least 9 years of experience
Desired Qualifications
Prior experience in in communications, public affairs, journalism or related field
Experience in providing communications support and counsel to senior executives or public officials
Skilled in writing press briefs, remarks development, etc. Strong editing skills.
Experience in drafting speeches and other written communications for corporate executives
Experience in creating strategic communications plans
Excellent relationship management skills and ability to manage/integrate with multiple stakeholders
Experience in electric utility industry or other highly regulated, high-profile industry
Ability to rapidly respond to immediate communications needs and issues
Working Conditions
Monday-Friday, 2-3 days per week in office. May be required to come into the office more due to travel and executive engagements.
Hybrid mobility classification - work will be performed from both remote and onsite locations after the onboarding period. However, hybrid employees should live within a reasonable commute to Duke Energy Plaza.
Occasional travel – 15-25% as needed.
