This position may be filled as an engineer I or one level higher as an engineer II depending on the experience level of the selected candidate.

The Engineer I position is the entry level of the Engineering classification hierarchy. Employees in the Engineer I position solve problems in engineering areas of specialization with close supervision. An Engineer I is expected to develop skills, and the ability to work with greater independence. An Engineer I has knowledge of fundamental concepts and procedures.

The Engineer II position is the intermediate level of the Engineering classification hierarchy. Employees in the Engineer II position solve complex problems in engineering areas of specialization with general supervision. An Engineer II is expected to develop advanced skills, and the ability to work with greater independence. An Engineer II effectively applies fundamental concepts and procedures to work that is fairly complex and varied.

This position provides engineering support for transmission line design and will primarily support the Duke Energy – Carolinas West region.

The role will involve working under the guidance of more experienced engineers to support design, analysis, and project execution activities. Applicants must be able to work effectively with individuals from diverse socio-economic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds and possess strong written and oral communication skills.

Responsibilities

  • Assists in providing engineering support in transmission line design, including performing basic calculations and analysis under direction of senior and lead engineers

  • Supports development of conceptual and detailed designs, including structures, foundations, and electrical clearances

  • Assists in preparation of job packages, drawings, technical reports, and other documentation

  • Participates in project teams to support planning, design, and execution activities

  • Supports construction activities by responding to field questions and assisting with issue resolution

  • Learns and applies engineering standards, codes, and company procedures

  • Assists in evaluating design options and identifying solutions to engineering problems

  • Develops technical skills through training, mentoring, and on-the-job experience

  • Maintains accurate records, files, and documentation

  • Builds positive working relationships to support coordination of work activities

  • Demonstrates professionalism and supports company goals

Basic/Required Responsibilities - Engineer I

Graduation from a four-year college or university with a Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET accredited program

A Master's degree in Engineering will be considered in lieu of the B.S. Engineering degree.

Basic/Required Responsibilities - Engineer II

Must have obtained Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET accredited program

Minimum of 2 years of engineering experience

A Master's degree in Engineering will be considered in lieu of the B.S. Engineering degree.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Internship, co-op, or academic experience in the utility industry

  • Exposure to transmission line design theories and principles

  • Familiarity with transmission line design software (e.g., PLS-CADD, PLS-POLE, PLS-TOWER)

  • Basic understanding of engineering codes and standards

  • Demonstrated ability to analyze problems and develop solutions with guidance

  • Strong collaboration and teamwork skills

  • Effective written and oral communication skills

  • Interest in obtaining FE/EIT certification

Mobility Classification - Hybrid

Work will be performed from both remote and onsite locations after the onboarding period. Employees should live within a reasonable daily commute to a Duke Energy facility.
