The hiring manager may elect to fill this position as an engineer II or one level higher as an engineer III dependent upon the experience of the selected candidate.
This role performs engineering studies, calculations, and settings development for substation protective relays. Responsibilities focus on applying new protective relaying for planned projects, as well as successful integration of new designs into existing legacy designs where required. This role also provides support and troubleshooting for implementation and commissioning of designed relays/protective systems as needed by field technicians. Additional tasks include support requests for stakeholder teams including Transmission Planning, Account Management, Tech Support, Operations, Asset Management and Compliance teams.
This role is at the advancing-level engineer who solves moderately complex protection engineering problems with limited supervision and increasing independence and manages work tasks with limited supervision and prompting.
Key Responsibilities (limited supervision):
Provide protective relay engineering expertise to identify, analyze, and resolve increasingly complex issues.
Plan and execute work (scope, schedule, estimates) and adapt to changing priorities.
Conduct engineering and related studies.
Create and update technical schematics and configuration files in support of planned project work in accordance with established standards, guidelines, and philosophies.
Prepare clear technical documentation (reports, calculations, sketches) for engineering analyses in support of developed deliverables.
Maintain and grow technical and professional skills.
Coordinate effectively with teammates and stakeholder teams; communicate clearly; maintain accurate records.
Support company goals and represent the company professionally.
Required/Basic Qualifications - Engineer II
Must have obtained Bachelor of Science in Engineering (Electrical) from an ABET accredited program
Minimum of 2 years of engineering experience
A Master's degree in Engineering (Electrical) will be considered in lieu of the B.S. Engineering degree.
Required/Basic Qualifications - Engineer III
Must have obtained Bachelor of Science in Engineering (Electrical) from an ABET accredited program
Minimum of 4 years of engineering experience
A Master's degree in Engineering (Electrical) will be considered in lieu of the B.S. Engineering degree.
Desired Qualifications:
Utility industry experience.
FE (Fundamentals of Engineering) exam passed.
Strong time management and prioritization skills.
Familiarity with protection tools (e.g., Aspen Relay Database/OneLiner, CymTCC, SEL-5010/5030, AcSELerator).
Knowledge of, or experience with, NERC PRC standards (e.g., PRC-006, -023, -025, -026, -027).
Knowledge of, or experience with, NERC CIP Standards (e.g. CIP-002, CIP-010)
Knowledge of electromechanical, solid-state, and microprocessor-based relays.
Knowledge of relay protection schemes and logic.

Additional Preferred Qualifications
Understanding of basic engineering theories and principles.
Understanding of basic practices of researching engineering and design issues, evaluating alternatives, making sound recommendations and preparing and presenting recommendations.
Ability to deal with a variety of individuals from various socio-economic, cultural and ethnic backgrounds.
Good written and oral communication skills.
Passing grade on the Engineering Fundamentals Exam.
Understanding of basic principles of project management.
Experience in the utility industry.
Department specific experience applicable to the hiring department.
