Position Summary
This position is responsible for the fueling of vehicles/equipment, cleaning of shop areas, and performing basic preventative maintenance, inspections, and repairs on utility vehicles and equipment. The incumbent will assist with driving vehicles to and from regional locations that are scheduled for PM services and repairs. Includes, but is not limited to passenger cars, pickup trucks, SUV’s, medium and heavy trucks, trailers and off-road equipment. Assist CSTs in parts functions such as arranging and cleaning of parts rooms. Pickup and delivery of parts and supplies from local vendors. Includes delivering parts to road technicians at field locations as needed. Performs PM services on light duty vehicles and other non-technical duties as assigned by supervision. Assist technicians with PMs on vehicles.
Maintenance operations may take place in the garage or at field locations during various work schedules depending on business needs. Must be able to work overtime as needed to meet the business needs.
Responsibilities
Perform fueling activities of vehicles/equipment regularly and during storms as needed.
Perform preventative maintenance inspections on light duty vehicles/equipment and assist higher classification of technicians with PMs on all vehicles and equipment.
Cleaning of shop floors, emptying trash, and maintaining general housekeeping inside and around shop area. Washing and cleaning of vehicles/equipment for maintenance. Responsible for shuttling vehicles and equipment.
Assist with Federal DOT inspections.
Adhere to all Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (FMCSR) for DOT inspections.
Provide assistance on di-electric test inspections.
Assist with hydraulic component repairs.
Assist higher classification of technicians with diagnostics and repairs on all vehicles/equipment.
Required/Basic Qualifications
Vehicle Maintenance Technician I
Two-year associate degree or certificate in auto, diesel, or heavy equipment mechanics from a vocational school.
In addition to required education above, one (1) year minimum of related experience.
In lieu of the required education, high school diploma AND two (2) years minimum of related experience.
Desired Qualifications
Electric Utility Fleet Experience
Class A CDL License with Haz-Mat & Tanker endorsement
Experience as garage helper or other maintenance function
Experience cleaning and fueling vehicles/equipment
Experience performing minor vehicle checks
Effective communication (both written and oral) and interpersonal skills
Demonstrate ability to interact effectively with peers, customers and management
Demonstrate ability to make sound decisions, exercising good judgement and setting priorities
Demonstrate the ability to work independently with minimal supervision
Experience with computer equipment, laptops, keyboards, tablets, etc. Ability to complete and maintain basic records (written and computer entry)

Job Specific Requirements
Must have a valid driver’s license
Must be able to obtain "CDL Class A" driver's license with Haz-mat/tank endorsement within a designated timeframe
Must be able to obtain and maintain nuclear unescorted access (nuclear sites only)
This position has a residency requirement. You must reside within 60 minutes of the assigned operations site. Relocation will be entirely at your own expense.
Valid NC or SC Class C driver’s license
Ability to pass testing required for unescorted nuclear access (nuclear sites only)
Ability to operate forklifts or be certified to do so within 90-120 days
Working Conditions
Must be able to stand and walk on concrete surface for extended periods of time
Must be able to work in garage environment with associated noise, fumes and dust and tolerate heights in aerial devices
Must be able to carry at least 50 lbs a distance of at least 25 feet
Capable of handling and lifting 50lbs or more repeatedly
Must be able to lift and/or push at least 100lbs several times per shift
Work requires frequent bending, climbing on/off equipment
Flexible to work in tight areas
Must be able to travel for training/work related events within Duke Energy's footprint (Midwest, Florida, Carolinas)
Must be able to respond to emergency situations
Must be able to work overtime
Onsite Mobility Classification – Work will be performed at a company facility.
