The mission of the Conservation Corps North Carolina (CCNC) is to empower young adults through meaningful outdoor work that benefits North Carolina’s land and water and creates healthy communities.
CCNC is a program of Conservation Legacy that partners with public land managers in North Carolina to engage motivated young adults, ages 15-30, to complete challenging and impactful conservation service projects throughout the state.
This position is part of a partnership between CCNC and the Hayti Promise Community Development Corporation to deliver the Hayti Promise Youth Corps Summer Program in Durham, North Carolina. The Assistant Crew Leader position is an opportunity to make a difference in young peoples’ lives while supporting neighborhood-based conservation and improvement projects along the historic Fayetteville Street Corridor. Assistant Crew Leaders work alongside the Crew Leader to mentor, supervise, and support youth participants, helping facilitate hands-on learning experiences that promote healthy communities and local environmental stewardship.
In this role, the Assistant Crew Leader will support the Crew Leader in guiding and mentoring a team of up to six high school–aged youth (typically ages 15–18) through the Hayti Promise Youth Corps program. Assistant Crew Leaders play an active role in daily supervision, coaching, and technical instruction, helping create the structure and support youth need to succeed. This position requires patience, strong communication, and a willingness to model professionalism while helping participants build confidence, teamwork skills, and basic workplace readiness.
Crews will complete trail, beautification, and land stewardship projects along the Fayetteville Street Corridor and surrounding community spaces, working in urban parks, greenways, private property, and other public or community-focused properties. Assistant Crew Leaders should feel comfortable supporting youth in active urban environments, maintaining strong situational awareness, and helping participants navigate environmental and site-specific hazards in a calm, proactive way. Together with the Crew Leader, the ACL helps foster a safe, supportive, and growth-focused environment where young people can challenge themselves, develop new skills, and see the impact of their work in their own neighborhood.
It means more than just showing up and doing the work, ACLs set an example of how to work hard with great enthusiasm through all kinds of conditions while practicing good judgement and safety. It means facilitating learning experiences for Crew Members, both formally and informally. This position may require additional participation time outside of standard project and crew hours.
During their time in the field, Hayti Promise youth crews work outdoors in all types of weather conditions, performing hands-on labor related to community-based conservation and neighborhood improvement projects. These projects may include trail improvements, beautification efforts, habitat restoration, invasive species treatments, and other work that strengthens the Hayti community.
ACLs are asked to work hard, stay positive, and be flexible with changing schedules, weather conditions, and project needs. They also need to be prepared to work with youth participants and the specific challenges that come with the age range. This is a seasonal position; ACLs are asked to fully commit to the experience, expectations, and timeline.
The Assistant Crew Leader will complete two weeks of paid training from June 1st – June 12th before supporting two separate youth crew sessions, each serving up to six high school–aged participants.
Session I: June 15th – July 3rd
Break Week: July 6th – July 10th
Session II: July 13th – August 7th
Each session operates on a Monday through Friday schedule. There will be a one-week break between sessions for both Crew Leaders and participants.
