Position Title: Interpretive Walking Tour Translation & Visitor Booklet Development – VISTA Summer Associate

Conservation Legacy Program: Stewards Individual Placement

Site Location:

First State National Historical Park

10 Market Street, New Castle, DE 19720

Terms of Service:

  • Start Date: 6/1/2026
  • End Date: 8/9/2026
  • AmeriCorps Slot Classification: 300 hours (Minimum-Time)

Purpose:

  • This project supports poverty alleviation by increasing equitable access to educational and cultural resources for underserved and multilingual communities across central and northern Delaware. By translating interpretive walking tours into Spanish and creating a publicly accessible booklet, the Summer Associate helps reduce barriers that prevent non-English speaking or limited English proficiency visitors from fully participating in free, community-based learning experiences offered by First State Heritage Park and First State National Historical Park.
  • The project builds capacity for the park by creating durable, multilingual interpretive materials that expand the park’s ability to serve a broader audience without increasing staff workload, aligning with strategies that strengthen long term outreach and program sustainability
  • Over 8–10 weeks, the AmeriCorps Summer Associate will begin by shadowing existing interpretive programs and learning about park resources, spending time alongside experienced interpreters at both First State National Historical Park and First State Heritage Park. Through guided observations the member will gain a deep understanding of interpretive storytelling methods, visitor engagement strategies, and the historical contexts presented at each site. Building on this foundation, the Summer Associate will translate existing interpretive walking tours into Spanish with accuracy and cultural respect; ensure translations reflect the tone, nuance, and visitor appropriate style observed during shadowing; design or support the visual layout of a clear, visitor friendly booklet summarizing each tour; collaborate closely with interpreters, community partners, and historically knowledgeable staff; assist with logistical planning to distribute finished materials to visitors. Through immersion, hands on practice, and guided mentorship, the Summer Associate will develop a strong working knowledge of park programs, interpretation techniques, and resource stories.

Description of Duties:

The Summer Associate will focus on capacity-building activities that produce internal planning resources, documentation tools, and community engagement materials. Duties may include compiling labor market research summaries, developing workforce resource inventories, creating community asset maps, organizing environmental data sets, drafting partnership coordination frameworks, designing planning templates and resource guides, and assisting with public-facing informational workshops, outreach campaigns, or site observations. Activities are designed to strengthen host organizations’ capacity, guide long-term workforce and environmental program development, provide tangible connections between planning tools and community needs, and support measurable outcomes in workforce access, environmental stewardship, and community engagement.

Over 8–10 weeks, the AmeriCorps Summer Associate will work alongside interpretive staff from both parks to:

• translate existing interpretive walking tours into Spanish

• ensure translations are accurate, culturally respectful, and visitor appropriate

• design or support the layout of a visitor friendly booklet that summarizes each tour

• collaborate with interpreters, community partners, and historically knowledgeable staff

• observe guided tours to understand nuance, tone, and storytelling approaches

• assist with planning how finished materials will be distributed to visitors statewide

This project directly enhances accessibility, broadens engagement, and connects Delaware’s diverse communities to their shared heritage.
